BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh capped of its seven-game opening home stand with a 10-1 setback to Army West Point on Sunday as the Black Knights finished off their three-game weekend sweep over the Mountain Hawks.
Army (16-14, 8-2 PL) broke open a seven-run lead over Lehigh (11-18, 1-8) with four runs in the fifth inning and put the game on ice as the Black Knight pitchers scattered three hits in the final five innings.
The Black Knights once again set the tone early as they scored two runs with a pair of hits in the first inning, marking the third time in the series they produced a run in the first inning. Army increased the lead with a run in the third and fourth innings with a total of three hits.
Lehigh knocked on the door in the first inning with the bases loaded, but Army worked out of the jam unscathed with an inning-ending strikeout. The Mountain Hawks threatened again in the fourth inning with runners on second and third, and this time managed to get a run in as Ryan Malloy's bunt remained fair up the first base line which allowed Tony Gallo to score from third. Lehigh attempted to bring another run in with a squeeze play, but Army got the lead runner out at third and then got a ground out to end the inning with only one run allowed.
After beginning the inning with a strikeout, Army ripped off three-straight hits in the fifth inning and then scored on a wild pitch. With runners on first and third with two outs recorded, Josh White came through with a clutch two-run double. A Lehigh throwing error extended the inning and Army capitalized with a RBI single by Jacob Hurtibese as the Black Knights finished the fifth inning with four runs and five hits to take an 8-1 lead.
The Army bullpen held off the Lehigh offense as Jacob Carte and Joe Santoro combined for 3.0 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and did surrender a single walk. Daniel Burggraaf earned the win as he tossed 6.0 innings, surrendering just one run on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
Jason Reynolds suffered the loss as he tossed 3.2 innings, allowing just two earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Reynolds' six strikeouts led all pitchers on the week. Luke Glavin came in to through the final inning and retired three-straight batters with a pair of strikeouts and a fly out.
James Bleming and Jeff Shanfeldt led the offense as each hit .500 on the weekend. Bleming also slugged a team-high .750 and drove in a team-best two runs. Shanfeldt also stepped up on defense as held the Patriot League's stolen bases leaders in check as he threw out five base runners from behind the plate on a total of eight attempts on the weekend.
Lehigh will look to regroup and snap its six-game skid with a make-up game on Tuesday against rival Lafayette. First pitch in Easton is slated for 3 p.m.
