Balanced team effort propels Lehigh to second place finish at Lafayette Invitational

HELLERTOWN, Pa. – A pair of sub-300 rounds led the Lehigh men's golf team to a second place finish at the 16-team Albarta Coca-Cola Lehigh Valley Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Lafayette Sunday at The Steel Club. With Monday's forecast calling for inclement weather, both rounds of the 36-hole event were played Sunday. Lehigh posted rounds of 298 and 291 to finish at 589, two strokes behind team champions Rhode Island, who shot one under par 287 in the final round to claim the title. Robert Morris finished third at 592.
 
Individually, Lehigh used a balanced team effort that placed three players in the top 15, while nine of the 10 rounds by the Mountain Hawks' five scoring players were 76 or lower.
 
Senior Billy Johns led Lehigh, tying for fifth place at even par 144 (73-71). Johns posted a field-leading nine birdies, including six in his final round one under par 71.
 
Junior Johnny Hsu and sophomore Ryan Kelly tied for 15th place at 148. Hsu made four birdies and five bogeys in an opening round 75, but was much steadier in his second round, shooting 73. Kelly totaled four birdies and eight bogeys over his 36 holes that included a 76 in the morning and a round of even par 72 in the afternoon.
 
Sophomore Owen Quinn carded two rounds of 75 to tie for 22nd place at 150. Quinn played the par five holes in five under par, including an eagle on the 15th hole in the second round.
 
Lehigh's fifth scoring player was junior Eamon Marone, who tied for 61st place at 156 (75-81). Marone had four birdies in his opening round 75 and finished with five for the tournament.
 
Two Mountain Hawks competed as individuals. Junior Max Redetzke led all Lehigh players with 25 pars and tied for 63rd place at 157 (77-80). Freshman Anthony Cordaro shot 159 (78-81) and tied for 71st place.
 
Connecticut's Tim Umphrey earned individual medalist honors after winning a three-way playoff on the second extra hole. Umphrey tied with Robert Morris' Max Palmer and Jason Short of Rhode Island at two under par 142.
 
Lehigh will next play in Villanova's Wildcat Invitational, April 9-10 in Malvern, Pa.
