Lehigh Gets First Win of Season in Saturday Split

2/18/2018 1:03:00 AM | Baseball

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Lehigh baseball team posted a 1-1 record Saturday on day two of the Hughes Bros. Challenge hosted by UNC Wilmington. The Mountain Hawks earned their first victory over the season with a 5-4 comeback victory over Eastern Kentucky in game one, before falling 15-6 to Butler in the nightcap.

In game one of the day, the bats came alive and an outstanding relief appearance by freshman Peter Woltersdorf, making his career debut, silenced the Eastern Kentucky (0-2) offense in the final three frames. Lehigh (1-2) trailed by one heading into the ninth and put two runs across to complete the comeback for its first win of the season. Jeff Shanfeldt notched the eventual winning run as he advanced home following a throwing by the second baseman attempting to get the runner at first.

The Mountain Hawks received a solid pitching effort as whole in game as only two arms were needed. Peter Moore took the ball to start the game and went 6.0 innings in his season debut. The senior lefty surrendered four runs, just two earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and five walks. Woltersdorf started the seventh in relief and did not allow a single hit his three-inning appearance. His lone walk was the only base runner he allowed as he collected the win his first appearance as a Mountain Hawk.

Trailing 4-1 after four innings, Lehigh racked up four unanswered runs, capped off by a two-run ninth inning. James Bleming led off the ninth with a triple and later scored as EKU's defensive replacement at second base, Corey Conklin, committed a fielding error. Conklin's defensive woes aided another Lehigh run as Jeff Shanfeldt scored from second following a throwing error by the second baseman.

The Lehigh sticks came alive again in the nightcap against Butler (3-0), but the Mountain Hawks were crippled by two big innings by the Bulldogs' offense. LU held a 3-2 lead through four innings, but Butler combined for 12 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 14-5 lead after the sixth. The Bulldogs compiled 10 hits in the fifth and sixth innings, while Lehigh aided their cause with a pair of throwing errors.

Sophomore Jason Reynolds made his first start of the season and was charged with the loss as he tossed 4.0 innings, surrendered seven runs, five earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Anthony Morrone made his second relief appearance of the season as he tossed 1.2 innings, surrendering one run on three hits. Buck Schwab also made his second appearance out of the pen as he tossed one complete scoreless inning with two strikeouts, one walk and surrendered two hits.

Shanfeldt and Bleming led the offense on the day as they each totaled four hits and combined for five runs and four RBI. Matt Hand, Chris Kersey and Mike Maguire reached compiled three hits on the day.

Lehigh will close out its Wilmington stint with a matchup against the host Seahawks Sunday at 2 p.m.
