WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Mountain Hawks closed out their opening weekend trip with a 5-4 setback to UNC Wilmington Sunday afternoon.
The two teams were tied, 4-4, heading into the seventh, but the Seahawks (2-1) managed to get a run across and hold the Mountain Hawks (1-3) off the board in the final two frames. UNCW's Ryan Jeffers led off the seventh with a double and two batters later, he traded places with David Sheaffer who doubled to bring Jeffers home. Lehigh got out of the jam as the next UNCW batter lined out to Chris Kersey who doubled up Sheaffer at second.
Lehigh threatened in the eighth inning before recording three-straight outs in the ninth. Ryan Bonshak started the eighth-inning threat with a single to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He then advanced to third following a pop up to the shortstop for the second out. Tony Gallo drew a walk to extend the inning, but the Seahawks worked out of the jam with a big inning-ending strikeout against Thomas Schumacher who had a hot bat going with three hits on the day.
Schumacher led Lehigh with his three hits on the day as he finished 3-for-4 with a run scored. Mike Maguire led with two RBI as his single in the fifth inning sparked a three-run inning that put Lehigh in the lead in the top of the fifth.
Matt Ratner got the ball to start the game in his season debut. He tossed 3.0 innings as he surrendered two runs on three hits with one strikeout and one walk. Chris Butera was charged with the loss as he gave up just one run on four hits in his 2.0 innings of work in his season debut.
For the week, Jeff Shanfeldt paced the team with a .462 batting average (6-for-13) to go along with a .538 slugging percentage and a .563 on-base percentage. James Bleming led the team with seven hits and nine total bases as he hit .438 for the week and led the squad with a .563 slugging percentage.
Freshman Peter Woltersdorf had the top outing on the mound this weekend as he picked up the win in his collegiate debut, tossing 3.0 scoreless and hitless innings in relief.
The Mountain Hawks will be heading back to the state of North Carolina next weekend as they will face North Carolina A&T in the three-game set beginning Friday.
