Lehigh Earns Saturday Split at NC A&T

2/24/2018 8:55:00 PM | Baseball

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After falling, 8-4, in game one of the day, Lehigh edged NC A&T, 3-2, in game two to salvage a doubleheader split Saturday on the road.

Senior lefty Peter Moore (1-0) was the catalyst for Lehigh (2-4) in the game two victory as he fanned eight batters, walked just two, and held the Aggies (2-4) to just three hits in his 7.0 innings of work. Sophomore Matt Hand earned his first save of the season as he tossed 1.1 hitless, shutout innings.

In game one, NC A&T scored a run in each of the first four innings as the lead-off man reached base in all four of those innings with three of those lead-off men scoring runs. Lead-off batters continued to hurt Lehigh as A&T led off the seventh and eighth innings with solo home runs as the Aggies owned an 8-1 advantage after eight innings of play.

Facing a seven-run deficit heading into the final frame, Lehigh did not go away without a fight. Ryan Bonshak led off the inning with a walk and later scored the inning's first run as Blake Rapoport singled to left field. The designated hitter, Chris Kersey, kept things going as he singled through the right side to knock in Thomas Schumacher from second. James Bleming drew a two-out walk to load the bases and Lehigh put another run across as Rapoport scored on a wild pitch. Looking for his third hit of the day, Ryan Malloy tried to keep the rally going, but went down swinging on a 2-2 count to end the game.

Schumacher led Lehigh with a career-high four hits in game one as he finished 4-for-4 and scored a team-high two runs. As a team, Lehigh tied its season-high with 12 hits in game one as six different Mountain Hawks recorded hits, including four with multi-hit performances.

As game two unfolded, Moore had Moore had a no-hitter working through the first three innings. The Aggies eventually broke up the no-no with a lead-off triple in the fourth inning. With runners on second and third, Moore retired three-straight batters to work out of the jam and hold A&T scoreless in the fourth.

Lehigh struck first with a run in the third. Chris Butera, who reached on a walk and advanced to third on a Rapoport single, crossed home when Mike Maguire reached on a fielder's choice. The Mountain Hawks tacked on two more runs in the sixth as a stolen base attempt by Lehigh forced an A&T throwing error which allowed Bleming to score from third and Jeff Shanfeldt to advance from second.

The Aggies put the pressure on Lehigh as they got a run back in the eighth and cut the deficit to one run. LU went three up, three down in the ninth, setting the table for a potential Aggie walk-off. After the lead-off batter reached on a hit by pitch, Hand buckled down and got the next batter to pop up on a bunt attempt and sealed the win for Lehigh with a game-ending double play.

The Lehigh pitching staff combined for a season-high nine strike outs in game two, while allowing just three walks. The LU arms also surrendered a season-low two runs on a season-low four hits, including just one extra-base hit

Lehigh will wrap up its three-game set with NC A&T Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium.
