Bethlehem, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team returns to action this weekend to continue its 10-game road trip in the state of North Carolina when the Mountain Hawks take on North Carolina A&T State. The first pitch of the three-game set is slated for 1 p.m. Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. Lehigh will play a doubleheader on Saturday followed by a Sunday matinee at 1 p.m. to close out the series.
Lehigh is coming off a 1-3 outing in the Hughes Brothers Challenge hosted by UNC Wilmington last weekend to open the season. The Mountain Hawks' first victory of the year came against Eastern Kentucky last Saturday. Freshman Peter Woltersdorf shined in his debut with the Brown and White as he threw three innings of hitless, shutout ball and picked up the win in relief. His performance on the mound earned him Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors. Senior James Bleming went 3-for-4 from the plate in the win as he compiled two RBIs and scored one run.
The Mountain Hawks came up just short against CAA preseason favorite UNCW, losing 5-4 Sunday. The two teams were tied, 4-4, heading into the seventh, but the Seahawks scored the go-ahead run in the seventh and the bullpen closed the door in the final two frames. LU left a runner stranded on third in the eighth inning before recording three-straight outs in the ninth.
For the week, junior Jeff Shanfeldt paced the team with a .462 batting average (6-for-13) to go along with a .538 slugging percentage and a .563 on-base percentage. Bleming led the team with seven hits and nine total bases as he hit .438 for the week and led the squad with a .563 slugging percentage.
NC A&T is also off to a 1-3 to the 2018 campaign. After splitting a doubleheader with Coppin State last weekend, the Aggies nearly pulled off the upset over No. 12 NC State on Tuesday. NC A&T then fell to High Point, 10-3, Wednesday at home. The Aggies' program is trending upward after improving by 15 wins from 2016 to 2017 as they finished the year 28-25 last spring. They tied a school record for most MEAC wins in a season and head coach Ben Hall was named the conference coach of the year.
Senior second baseman Milton Rivera leads the Aggie offense in most categories as he owns a .412 batting average (7-for-17) with a .471 slugging percentage and a .444 on-base percentage. He has scored a team-leading five runs and is tied for the lead with eight total bases. Senior catcher Adan Ordonez has also been a productive bat in the lineup as he is hitting .267 (4-for-15) with a team-leading .533 slugging percentage to go along with a .353 on-base percentage, and he is tied with Rivera with eight total bases.
Senior righty Josh Bottenfield has been one of the most effective arms for A&T as he owns a 1.50 ERA through a team-leading 6.0 innings of work across two relief appearances. Sophomore righty Michael Johnson has the team's only win on the season as he has tossed 2.0 hitless, scoreless innings in relief in one appearance this season.
These two schools have only met once in their respective histories. The Aggies beat the Mountain Hawks 17-8 in 2013 in Greensboro.
After this three-game set, Lehigh will conclude its 10-game North Carolina road trip with a three-game set against Davidson next weekend. It will mark the eighth, ninth, and 10th games of Lehigh's 25-game road trip to start the year.
