Miles Captures 50 Free Title, More Records Fall on Second Day of Patriot League Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks completed a very successful day on the second day of the Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday with one individual champion, six school records and four NCAA B-Cut qualifying times.
Freshman Payton Miles had the top performance of the day for Lehigh as she captured first place in the 50 freestyle. Her winning time of 20.80 set a new school record and finished under the NCAA B-Cut qualifying standard. Miles becomes Lehigh's first Patriot League Champion in any event, male or female, since Kaitlyn Ruffing captured the 50 freestyle crown in 2015. Ruffing finished just behind Miles on Thursday night with a third place finish with a time of 23.11.
The night began with Meghan Thompson capturing third place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:48.67. Thompson's time was good enough for a new school record as she lowered the old mark of 4:52.38. Abby Thomson also scored crucial points in the 500 freestyle as she won the consolation finals with a time of 4:53.22. Cora Summerfield added on more points for the squad as she placed 14th with a time of 4:58.62.
The men scored their first points of the night in the 500 freestyle as freshman Walker Wilson led Lehigh with a 10th place finish with a strong time of 4:30.89. Fellow freshman teammate Daniel Brooks gave the squad more points as he placed 13th with a time of 4:33.95.
Kelly Carroll produced another school record on the women's side as she placed fifth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.24 to edge out teammate Courtney Ferreira who placed sixth with a time of 2:03.50. Ferreira set the school record for the 200 IM earlier in the day in the prelims with a time of 2:03.93, only to have that mark lowered by Carroll in the finals.
Jacob Moyar put together a strong performance against a tough field in the 200 IM. The senior placed fourth and set a new school record with his time of 1:48.42. His time also finished under the NCAA B-Cut qualifying standard as he joined four other swimmers to also meet that standard in the finals.
The men saw another school record fall and more NCAA qualifying marks produced in the 50 freestyle. Seniors Justin White and Jamal Willis squared off in the finals as White edged out Willis with a time of 19.96 to finish in second place, while Willis placed third with a time of 20.09. White also set a new school record in the process and both swimmers met the NCAA B-Cut qualifying standard. Zach Tieke also scored points for the team in the 50 freestyle as he placed 15th with a time of 21.10.
The men took to boards on Thursday night for the one-meter dive competition. Croldy Veliz represented the Brown and White as he placed 13th with a score of 174.00 to pick up key points for the team.
The Lehigh women closed out their night by taking sixth in the 400 medley relay. The foursome of Rachel Rider, Ferreira, Carroll and Ruffing posted a time of 3:49.12 to finish just off the school record mark of 3:49.03.
The men closed out their night in the 400 medley relay and lowered another school record. Dean Shafritz, Tyler Christ, Moyar and White teamed up to place fifth in the finals with a record time of 3:19.13.
After a several stellar performances on day two, the women move up one spot into fourth place with 182 points and the men drop one spot to fifth place with 150.5 points. Navy holds the top spot for both the women and the men with 299 points and 275 points, respectively.
The Mountain Hawks return to the pool on Friday as the 2017 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships rolls on to day three. Friday's event will consist of the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, women's one-meter diving and 200 freestyle relay.
