TEANECK, N.J. – The Lehigh baseball team wasn't able to get much going Saturday afternoon at Fairleigh Dickinson as the Knights claimed 10-6 and 7-0 wins in a doubleheader at FDU's Naimoli Baseball Complex. The Mountain Hawks fall to 3-6 with the losses, while FDU improves to 4-6.
Senior Mackey Price led Lehigh offensively in the two games combined with a 3-for-6 showing at the plate, two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore James Bleming recorded two hits and drew three walks in the two games.
The Knights struck right away in the first inning of the series opener, a seven-inning affair, as a solo home run from Shane Siebler and two-run shot from John Giakas gave FDU an early 3-0 lead. FDU then plated two more runs in the second on a two-run double from Matt McCann.
Lehigh was able to get two runs back in the top of the third as freshman Jeff Shanfeldt reached base on an error before Price singled up the middle and Bleming drew a base on balls. Junior Jacen Nalesnik followed with a fielder's choice RBI before Price later scored on a wild pitch to trim FDU's lead to 5-2.
The Knights responded in the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back two-out doubles to re-extend their lead to 7-2. After a scoreless fourth inning, Lehigh got a run back in the fifth as another Nalesnik RBI groundout scored Price to put the score at 7-3, but FDU countered with two more runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 9-3 lead.
Junior Patrick Donnelly led off the sixth with a single before sophomore Chris Kersey drew a two-out walk and freshman Ryan Malloy followed with an RBI single. Price then knocked a two-run double to left center to pull the Mountain Hawks within 9-6. FDU added a run in the bottom of the sixth and then kept Lehigh off the board in the top of the seventh as the Knights claimed a 10-6 game-one win.
Lehigh senior starter Kevin Long suffered the loss after giving up seven runs on six hits with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings. FDU starter Corey Zeller claimed the win.
Fairleigh Dickinson picked up where it left off in the day's second game, also a seven-inning contest, as a pair of RBI singles scored three unearned runs to put the Knights ahead 3-0. A three-run homer from Giakas plated three more unearned runs in the second as the Knights extended their lead to 6-0. The Lehigh pitching staff settled in from there, only giving up two hits and a fifth-inning run, but the Mountain Hawks weren't able to get the bats going as FDU claimed the 7-0 victory in the nightcap.
Senior starter Kevin Boswick was credited with the loss after giving up six runs, none of which were earned, on five hits with four strikeouts in 4.0 innings. FDU starter Chris Kachmar hurled all seven innings while giving up four hits to earn the win.
Lehigh and Fairleigh Dickinson will wrap up their four-game series with a 12 p.m. Sunday doubleheader as the Mountain Hawks make their home debut at Legacy Park.
