BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball wrapped up its weekend series against the Holy Cross Crusaders on Sunday afternoon from J. David Walker Field. The Mountain Hawks fell 7-2 to secure a weekend sweep for the Crusaders.
Starting pitcher Derek Volz earned the win for Holy Cross (9-13, 5-1 PL) after striking out four batters while allowing four hits and one earned run in 5.0 innings. Lehigh (5-15, 2-4 PL) reliever Brandon Coughlin was credited with the loss after conceding the lead in the bottom of the fifth.
The Crusaders took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Van Coughlin RBI double. Lehigh starter Jake Mulvehill then settled in, allowing no runs through the next three innings. A Raffaele Rogers RBI single tied the game in the third inning and kept the score 1-1 headed to the fifth.
Gianni Royer broke the tie for Holy Cross in the top of the fifth courtesy of a sac-fly. Royer extended the Crusader lead to three in the top of the seventh on a two-RBI homer before Trystan Crawford responded with a solo shot of his own to make it 4-2 headed to the eighth.
The Crusaders added three runs in the top of the eighth on a bases loaded walk and Braden Connors two-RBI single that gave Holy Cross a five-run advantage. Reliever Henry Harding recorded the outs necessary in the eighth and ninth innings to secure the weekend sweep for the Crusaders.
Rogers and Crawford both went 2-4 on the day while Dom Patrizi, Aidan Quinn, Ryan Cochran, Owen Walewander, Ian Wirtz, and Silvio Giardina also recorded hits for Lehigh. Max Treonze, David Andolina, Cole Kochanowicz, and Ralph Gariano appeared on the mound for the Mountain Hawks in addition to Mulvehill and Coughlin.
