LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lehigh baseball kicked off a three-game weekend series from Depew Field on Friday afternoon against the first-place Bucknell Bison. The Bison deterred a late comeback effort from the Mountain Hawks to hold onto a 3-2 victory in game one of the series.
Bucknell (12-11, 6-1 PL) reliever Tyler Hawkins earned the win despite a standout performance from starter Everett Garber who had seven strikeouts and only one earned run in 7.0 innings. Hadley Maxwell picked up his fourth save of the season while the loss was credited to Lehigh (6-16, 2-5 PL) reliever Max Treonze.
Sam Fairhurst started the game for the Mountain Hawks and continued upon his hot start to Patriot League play, striking out five batters with only one earned run in 5.1 innings of action. The transfer from Catholic University has posted a 1.26 ERA with 16 strikeouts through three Patriot League starts.
Both Fairhurst and Garber were fantastic, allowing no runs and only seven hits between the two of them through five innings. The Mountain Hawks finally broke the seal in the top of the sixth courtesy of an Owen Walewander solo homer to lift Lehigh to a 1-0 advantage. The Bison responded in the latter half of the inning, sending a run past home plate on an error to once again even the score.
Lehigh and Bucknell traded 1-2-3 innings in the seventh before the Bison threatened in the eighth. Lleyton Coupe picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice to give Bucknell the lead while an additional RBI from John Calabrese bolstered the Bison lead to two runs with only three outs remaining for Lehigh to play with.
Down to their final three outs, the Mountain Hawks put on their rally caps in the top of the ninth. Lehigh loaded the bases which made way for Ryan Cochran to send Robbie Carvelli past home plate to cut the deficit to one run. Aidan Quinn then singled to load the bases once again, but Bucknell forced a pop-up on the next at bat to close out the game.
Both Quinn and Carvelli notched two hits on the afternoon while Cochran, Walewander, Trystan Crawford, and Ian Wirtz also got hits on the board for the Mountain Hawks.
The Mountain Hawks will play game two of the series against the Bison on Saturday, March 28 at 1 p.m. from Depew Field.
