BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Patriot League play continued Saturday afternoon from J. David Walker Field for Lehigh baseball in a doubleheader against the Holy Cross Crusaders. The Mountain Hawks dropped the doubleheader with a 1-0 loss in a seven-inning game one and a 6-4 loss in a nine-inning game two.
Holy Cross (8-13, 4-1 PL) starting pitcher Jaden Wywoda picked up the win for the Crusaders in game one after pitching a complete 7.0 inning shutout with nine strikeouts, four hits, and a walk. Lehigh (5-14, 2-3 PL) reliever Christopher Nell was credited with the loss after allowing the lone Holy Cross run in fifth inning.
Wywoda and Lehigh starter Sam Fairhurst were effective through the first four innings, as neither allowed a run. Both teams managed multiple base runners at different points in the opening frames, but Fairhurst and Wywoda managed to keep the game scoreless. The Crusaders finally broke through in the top of the fifth when a groundout from Van Coughlin pushed CJ Egrie past home plate. Wywoda kept the Mountain Hawks off the board in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to secure the game one win.
Aidan Quinn, Ryan Cochran, Owen Walewander, and Jack Frankovic accounted for Lehigh's hits in game one.
Holy Cross relief pitcher Jake Lenahan earned the win in game two after striking out two in 3.0 scoreless innings. Cole Kochanowicz was credited with the loss for the Mountain Hawks after conceding the lead to the Crusaders in the eighth inning.
The Crusaders struck first in the second inning thanks to an Owen Stelzer RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. The Mountain Hawks' offense had a strong response in the third, scoring two runs on RBIs from Cochran and Robbie Carvelli to lead 2-1 through three innings.
In the top of the fifth inning, Holy Cross tied the game with an RBI from Coughlin before a Ryan Grundy double sent two more runs past home plate. Trailing 4-2, Owen Walewander provided a two-run bomb to left field that tied the game 4-4 after five innings.
The Mountain Hawks and Crusaders traded a pair of scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh before Holy Cross broke the tie with a run from a wild pitch in the eighth inning. John LaFleur scored off an error to extend the lead to two in the top of the ninth. Lenahan retired the side 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth to secure the doubleheader sweep.
Quinn finished game two going 2-5 with a double and a run scored while Carvelli went 2-4 with an RBI. Cochran provided an RBI and scored a run while Walewander went 1-2 with a home run, two RBIs, and two walks. Raffaele Rogers also registered a hit in game two.
