BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis moved its season record to 2-0 after picking up a hard-fought 5-2 win over previously unbeaten Saint Francis (Pa.) Sunday afternoon inside the Lewis Tennis Center. Lehigh earned the doubles point and won four flights of singles, including a victory from freshman Bryant Born at No. 2 singles that clinched the match. The Mountain Hawks deal the Red Flash, who had beaten defending Patriot League Champion Navy earlier this season, its first loss of the season as Saint Francis falls to 4-1.
"This was the strongest doubles performance I have seen from our group so far," said Howard Talmud '77 Head Coach Wouter Hendrix. "We were clicking on all cylinders. A resilient Saint Francis team made it a dog fight in singles and they were a tough out."
The Mountain Hawks swept the doubles matches with impressive efforts from all three duos. Freshman Christopher Auteri and sophomore Jack Petersen earned a 6-2 win in the third flight before Born and freshman George Cooper secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles. Senior Jeremy Kochman and junior Graham Lehman claimed a 6-4 win at the top flight.
The Red Flash evened the match at 1-1 as Washi Gervais grabbed a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kochman at the top flight of singles. Petersen followed with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Jan Vit Suntar at No. 3 singles before Auteri battled for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 over SFU's Rodrigo Tico at the fifth flight to put Lehigh ahead 3-1.
Born, playing at No. 2 singles against Alec Dylan Foo-Kune, won his first set in the tiebreak before dropping the second and coming back with a 7-5 win in the third to clinch the victory for the Mountain Hawks.
Cooper lost a tight 1-6, 6-4, 10-5 battle to Plamen Avuski at No. 5 singles. Junior Tyler Hansen wrapped up the match with a strong 6-4, 7-5 over Eli Cerdan in the sixth flight to secure a 5-2 victory for Lehigh.
"I'm very happy for Born who got his first collegiate win with the clinch in a high-level match," said Hendrix. "Hansen's win shows the depth of our roster."
The Mountain Hawks return to action Friday at 5 p.m. against Stony Brook inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
