BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team will have a much different look as the Mountain Hawks prepare to open their fall season this weekend at the Colgate Invitational. After losing four players to graduation, Lehigh enters the 2015-16 season with more newcomers (five) than returnees (three). Several newcomers will make their varsity debuts this weekend at the Seven Oaks Golf Club in Hamilton, N.Y.
Â
Among those lost to graduation were three-time All-Patriot League performer Harley Abrams and two-time all-leaguer Carlos Kim.
Â
The senior member of the 2015-16 Mountain Hawks is David Olexson. The Easton, Pa. product walked onto the team prior to the 2014 spring season. He appeared in all but one tournament last year, leading the Mountain Hawks at the Lehigh Invitational, while tying for 27th place at the league championship.
Â
Sophomore Billy Johns returns after a strong freshman campaign in which the Georgia native earned medalist honors at the Wildcat Invitational, becoming Lehigh's first medalist in a large-field event since 2004. Johns carried a 76.9 stroke average, highlighted by a 67 in the final round of his win at Villanova's tournament.
Â
Also returning for Lehigh is junior Brendan Worthy, who played 14 competitive rounds last season, shooting 73 in the final round of the Lafayette Invitational and tying for 33rd at the league championship.
Â
The trio of returnees will be joined by five freshmen: Lee Hammerschmidt from Armonk, N.Y., Jonathan Hsu from Atlanta, Eamon Marone from Belvidere, N.J., Max Redetzke from Lakeville, Minn., and Lehigh Valley product Tim Wolak, a former Colonial League champion for Moravian Academy.
Â
Lehigh's fall opener, the Colgate Invitational, is a 54-hole event featuring 36 holes Saturday and the final 18 on Sunday. Colgate's Seven Oaks Golf Club was the site of last season's Patriot League Championship. Â The 14-team field features Bucknell, Canisius, Cornell, Fairleigh Dickinson, Hofstra, Iona, Lafayette, Niagara, Ottawa, St. Bonaventure, Wagner, and Youngstown State in addition to Lehigh and the host Raiders.
Â
Action begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun start both days at the Seven Oaks Golf Club, which plays to a par 72 at 6,950 yards.
Â
Last year, Lehigh tied for sixth out of 14 teams at the Colgate Invitational. Olexson, Johns and Worthy all competed for the Mountain Hawks, with Johns leading the trio, tying for 43rd at 237 (79-79-79).
Â
The Colgate Invitational is the first of three September tournaments for Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks will play in the Rutgers Invitational, September 11-12 and Columbia's Tuxedo Autumn Invitational September 25-26.
Â
In October, Lehigh will battle Lafayette in the annual Presidents' Cup matches October 13 in Gladstone, N.J. before the Mountain Hawks conclude their fall season by hosting the Lehigh Invitational on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club October 16-17.
