
Mountain Hawks set to open against LSU in Baton Rouge Regional Friday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team returns to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history and first time since 2006 when the Mountain Hawks travel to the Baton Rouge Regional Friday through Monday. The Mountain Hawks join host LSU, the No. 2 seed in the 2015 NCAA Baseball Tournament, UNC Wilmington and Tulane in Baton Rouge. Lehigh opens the tournament Friday at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT on the SEC Network against the Tigers from LSU's Alex Box Stadium.
The winner of the Lehigh-LSU game will play the winner of the UNCW-Tulane opening round matchup Saturday evening, while the two losing teams will face each other at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT Saturday. The regional is double-elimination format.
The Mountain Hawks claimed their second-ever league crown after taking down top-seeded Navy in a best-of-three championship series May 16-17. Five RBI from junior Mike Garzillo complimented the strong pitching efforts of juniors Kevin Long and Kevin Boswick to help Lehigh capture a 7-3 win in the series opener. The second game of the series was suspended Saturday in the bottom of the tenth inning with the score tied at eight before the contest resumed Sunday and the Mids rallied to extend the series with a 9-8, 11-inning victory. The Mountain Hawks then gutted out a 4-3, 10-inning victory in the decisive game three. Senior Nick Macaione fired ten complete innings to lead Lehigh to its first championship since 2006, while classmate Connor Faust recorded the game-winning RBI in the top of the tenth inning. Lehigh earned wins in games one and three of the semifinal series against third-seeded Holy Cross at Legacy Park May 9-10. The Mountain Hawks earned the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League Tournament with a 12-8 league record.
Garzillo leads Lehigh for the season with a .363 batting average, 13 home runs, 54 RBI and a .657 slugging percentage that ranks 18th in the nation. Senior Justin Pacchioli follows with a.348 batting average and a team-best 48 runs scored. Pacchioli's on-base percentage of .489 ranks 15th in the nation, while his average of 0.61 stolen bases per game sits 12th in all of Division I. Pacchioli holds Lehigh's career and single-season stolen bases records. Sophomore Jacen Nalesnik follows with a .311 batting average and ranks second on the team with 35 RBI.
Macaione is projected to get the start against the Tigers Friday. The senior holds a 3-4 record and a team-best 2.82 ERA. Senior J.R. Edwards (1-3, 3.40), Long (5-2, 6.64) and senior Nick Stephens (4-6, 4.20 ERA) have also been strong starters for Lehigh this season. Boswick leads the bullpen with four saves to go along with a 3-3 record and 3.55 ERA. The junior holds a 0.95 ERA with 25 strikeouts and just five walks in his last 28.1 innings thrown.
The Tigers earned the No. 2 national seed in the 2015 NCAA Baseball Tournament after winning the regular-season SEC Championship with a 48-10 overall record and 21-8 mark in SEC play. LSU's team batting average of .320 ranks third in the nation and the Tigers are led offensively by Chris Chinea with a .369 batting average and a team-best 55 RBI. Tigers head coach Paul Mainieri was awarded SEC Coach of the Year honors, while pitcher Alex Lange (10-0, 2.11 ERA) earned SEC Freshman of the Year plaudits. Lehigh and LSU will be meeting for the first time in program history Friday. Lehigh has only played one game against a current SEC member. The Mountain Hawks fell to Alabama in 1907.

UNCW is making its seventh NCAA regional appearance. The Seahawks hit .306 as a team as Terence Connelly leads the way with a .354 batting average. First team All-CAA member Zach Shields hits .348 with 37 RBI, while fellow first team member Steven Linkous has scored a team-best 60 runs and hits .327. First team All-CAA pitcher Jordan Ramsey leads the Seahawks with an 8-2 record and 1.60 ERA. Lehigh went 0-3 against CAA opponents this season, with all three losses coming against Delaware. The Mountain Hawks and UNCW have met four times in the past and the all-time series is even at 2-2. The two teams played a three-game set to open the 2013 season as UNCW claimed a 15-0 win in game one, Lehigh grabbed game two 4-1 and the Seahawks earned the series win with a 6-1 victory in game three. Lehigh won the first-ever meeting between the two teams 5-4 on Feb. 26, 2010.
The Green Wave earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament as the No. 3 seed in the Baton Rouge Regional after compiling a 34-23 overall record and 14-12 in American Athletic Conference play. Tulane hits .252 as a team and holds a 3.13 ERA, Stephen Alemais leads the squad with a .314 batting average, while Patrick Duester has tallied a team-best seven wins on the mound. Alemais and pitcher Corey Merrill were both named second team All-Conference. Lehigh and Tulane have never met before.
