MALVERN, Pa. – A final round four under par 67 propelled Lehigh freshman Billy Johns to individual medalist honors capping a strong final day for the Lehigh men's golf team at the Wildcat Invitational Tuesday at White Manor Country Club. Johns' 67 combined with an opening round 73 gave him the individual crown at two under par 140, good for a two stroke victory over four players.

As a team Lehigh carded a one over par 285 on Tuesday, to move up to fifth place in the 16 team field at 592 (307-285).

Johns carded the lowest competitive round of the year for the Mountain Hawks to date and just the third round in the 60s this season. His round included six birdies and two bogeys, keyed by three consecutive birdies on holes 10, 11 and 12.

With his victory, Johns became the first Lehigh men's golfer to earn medalist honors in an event since Steve Suarez won the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Invitational in 2004. Johns' win marked the first for a Lehigh male in a tournament with ten or more teams since Nam-Kyu Park won the George Washington Invitational in March 2004.

Three of Lehigh's five scoring players shot par or better in Tuesday's final round. Senior Carlos Kim joined Johns in the top ten, shooting 71 on Tuesday to tie for eighth at three over par 145 (74-71). Junior Harley Abrams bounced back from an 80 in Monday's opening round with a one under par 70 on Tuesday to tie for 24th place at 150.

Both senior Zach Allinson and junior Dave Olexson shot 77 on Tuesday. Allinson tied for 58th place at 157 (80-77), while Olexson finished in a tie for 68th at 160 (83-77).

Senior Jack Russell competed as an individual and also broke 80 in the final round. Russell carded a 79 to tie for 77th place at 161 (82-79).

Lehigh's 285 marked the second single round team score in the tournament. Binghamton finished with a 281 on Tuesday and took the team title at 581 (300-281). The Bearcats rallied past Delaware for a three stroke victory and bested Drexel and Saint Joseph's by ten strokes, while the Mountain Hawks' strong finish left them just 11 strokes out of first.

The Mountain Hawks will be back on the links this weekend when they compete in the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Lafayette Sunday and Monday at Silver Creek Country Club in Hellertown.Â
