CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The Lehigh rowing team enjoyed a strong showing at the Murphy Cup on Saturday, highlighted by a pair of men's freshmen boats who made the grand finals and the Women's Varsity Eight who advanced to the petite finals.

"We had a solid day of racing across the board," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "All the women's boats definitely improved upon the previous weekend which was great to see. The freshmen men really stepped up and showed that they have some speed this year. We're looking forward to see what happens with racing in two weeks."

Lehigh's men's novice eight boat finished first in its morning heat with a time of 6:29.79 before coming in sixth in the finals with a time of 6:35.64. The men's novice four also made the finals behind a time of 7:34.10 in the morning heat, which was good for second place. That crew went on to place fifth in the finals (7:32.76).

The women's varsity eight also enjoyed a strong day, with a time of 7:06.73 in the morning (good for third place) and 7:02.99 in the petite finals, which was fifth.

"This is really the first time that we sat bow-ball-to-bow-ball (level) with a number of crews who have historically been faster than us," said Conley. "We didn't back down. It was good to see that mental toughness come through."

Lehigh will return to action in two weeks at the Knecht Cup on Apr. 11 and 12. The River Cup against Lafayette originally scheduled for next Saturday (Apr. 4) has been moved to Apr. 25 on Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown.
