BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After a strong showing at the Murphy Cup last weekend, the Lehigh rowing team hosts Lafayette in the program's annual River Cup Regatta on Saturday. Racing begins at 9 a.m. on the Lehigh River in Allentown.
Â
The River Cup has happened every year that Lehigh has featured a rowing team. This year's regatta was originally scheduled for Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown, but due to the immense cold this winter, there is still significant icing on the lake. The River Cup has been moved back to Allentown with adjustments to the racing. Due to construction upriver, the Lehigh River course is no longer good for 2000m so on Saturday, the races will be best-of-three 1000m.
Â
The Mountain Hawks are always excited about their regatta against archrival Lafayette.
Â
"This is our connection to the rivalry and it is our way to demonstrate with our sport how much we appreciate being contributors to this rich history," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley.
Â
Last season, the Mountain Hawks won all but two races against the Leopards to claim the men's, women's and overall trophies for another year. Both Varsity Eight boats picked up impressive victories to set the tone for a successful day.
Â
After an up-and-down spring opener, the Mountain Hawks bounced back in a big way last weekend at the Murphy Cup. Leading the way was a pair of men's freshmen boats, who made the grand finals, and the Women's Varsity Eight, who advanced to the petite finals.
Â
That momentum has carried through the week of practice and hopefully, into the weekend ahead.
Â
"The team has done a great job of staying focused and has worked hard this week in practice to try and find more speed," said Conley. "This year, we are looking to show that our depth has definitely developed since last year and with that, our speed has grown as well."
Â
On Thursday, the Patriot League preseason poll was released and the Lehigh women's squad was predicted seventh, finishing ahead of Colgate and Loyola.
After Saturday's racing, the Mountain Hawks return to action at the Knecht Cup next Saturday and Sunday on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, New Jersey.
