Lehigh Competes Against Fairfield, Loyola, and Iona At Mountain Hawk Invite
3/28/2026 6:21:00 PM | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing
LAKE NOCKAMIXON, Pa. – Lehigh men's and women's rowing hosted Fairfield, Loyola Maryland, and Iona at Lake Nockamixon for the Mountain Hawk Invite on Saturday morning. The Mountain Hawks competed against the Stags, Greyhounds, and Gaels in 1V8+, 2V8+, and 3V8+ races.
"Pleased to host the event thanks to the support of Lehigh facilities, volunteers, parents, and our fellow Lehigh student athletes who came to support," said Steven J. '69 & Karen A. Lee head coach Peter Costas. "Thanks to the teams for making the long drive to race and roll with the challenges of cold conditions. Following the races from the officials launch, it was great to see a lot of passion in the Lehigh boats. Conditions required boats to restart the rhythm in the chop and gusts. I felt our coxswains did a tremendous job managing the focus, rhythm, and responses through multiple races."
Lehigh opened the day taking on Fairfield and Iona. The first race of the day was the men's first varsity eight, which was won by Fairfield with a time of 6:04.11. Lehigh came in second place with a time of 6:08.91 while Iona's boat finished in 6:21.96. Against Loyola, the Lehigh men's first varsity eight finished behind the Greyhounds with a time of 5:58.96.
"Today was a hard-fought effort for our team out on the lake," said junior John Deutch. "We knew it would be rough coming in and still put together two solid races through the wind and cold. Not exactly the results we were hoping for, but still a lot of positives to take away from racing and put forth in practice in the coming weeks. Super excited to get back out on the water and race Bucknell and Fordham next week."
The men's second varsity eight finished second at 6:19.51 behind Fairfield's 5:58.26. Against Loyola, the men's second varsity eight placed second of three competing boats with a time of 6:39.37.
"Today was a cold, windy day at Lake Nockamixon," said sophomore Cullen Kingston. "The first race of the day was alright, but we knew there was more to give. The second race against Loyola we put it all together and had a solid sprint. Overall, it was a good day. My boat learned a lot from today's races, and we've definitely got more speed to bring next weekend at Bucknell."
The men's third varsity eight finished behind Fairfield with a finish of 7:02.95 while the boat finished in third against Loyola and Lehigh's second varsity eights with a time of 7:17.40.
"Today's race was a great experience for us, especially for those that had never raced before," said first-year Joseph LaFond. "We pushed through the tough conditions and gave it our all on both pieces of the day. Our morale and attitude stayed high and I'm excited to see what we can continue to build as a team."Â
Against Fairfield and Iona, the women's first varsity eight finished in second with a time of 7:02.8, but battled back to defeat Patriot League foe Loyola with a time of 6:44.72 in their head-to-head race.
The women's second varsity eight bested Fairfield by a whole ten seconds, clocking in at 7:10.19 to take first. The Mountain Hawks then finished ahead of Loyola in the second varsity eight race at 6:49.97.
Lehigh's women's third varsity eight defeated Fairfield by a margin of 6:58.89 to 7:21.76 before beating Loyola's third boat by over an entire minute, 7:20.80 to 8:25.56.
Lehigh men's and women's rowing return to the water on Saturday, April 4 on the road against Bucknell and Fordham.
