BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team will conclude its fall campaign as the Mountain Hawks host the Lehigh Invitational this weekend. The invitational will feature 12 teams for a two-day, 36-hole event, which will be played Friday and Saturday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club.
Saucon Valley Country Club, founded in 1920, has grown from 18 holes and a clubhouse to become one of the largest private clubs in North America. It encompasses 800 acres and consists of four courses, including the Weyhill Course, Old Course, Grace Course and Short Course. The Grace Course opened with nine holes in the fall of 1953 with the second nine opened for play in 1958. Named for Eugene Gifford Grace (Lehigh Class of 1899), longtime president and chairman of Bethlehem Steel, the Grace Course measures 7,051 yards from the championship tees and features greens nearly twice the size of those on the Old Course but without the severe contours.
This weekend's tournament marks the fifth and final event of the fall season. The Mountain Hawks' season is highlighted by a seventh place finish out of 14 teams at the Rutgers Invitational. Lehigh also finished 11th out of 14 at the Colgate Invitational and ninth out of 11 at the Tuxedo Autumn Invitational.
The Mountain Hawks lost a hard-fought battle in the President's Cup against archrival Lafayette on Tuesday. The teams were deadlock at 4-4 before the Leopards pulled away in the singles matches to pick up a 9-7 victory and retain the cup. Freshman Johnny Hsu and senior Dave Olexson helped Lehigh Hawks pick up two victories apiece.
Last year, the Mountain Hawks finished 10th out of 12 teams in the Lehigh Invitational. Olexson finished 18th overall at 158 (81-77) as an individual to lead all Lehigh players.
All eight Mountain Hawks on the roster are expected to compete this weekend, with five players serving as Lehigh's scoring team and three competing as individuals.
Along with Lehigh, the 12-team field will feature Rider, Villanova, Siena, Monmouth, Manhattan, Bucknell, St. Francis, Fordham, St. Peters, Lafayette, and La Salle.
The Lehigh Invitational will tee off Friday at 9:30 a.m. with the first 18 holes from the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. The tournament will conclude on Sunday with the final 18 holes beginning at 8 a.m. Lehigh will be playing in the first five groups off of hole No. 1 on Friday. The Mountain Hawks will play with Rider and Bucknell.
