
Mountain Hawks close fall season with second place finish at Lehigh Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On a cool, windy Saturday, the Lehigh men's golf team fought its way to a second place finish as the Lehigh Invitational wrapped up with the final nine holes on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. Four of Lehigh's five scoring players broke 40 on their final nine holes to finish the second round at 312. The Mountain Hawks' final score of 621 (309-312) was 14 strokes behind team champion Bucknell as the Bison finished at 607 (299-308).

"The guys played solid today," Lehigh head coach Henry D'Alberto said. The weather was tough but I believe we had four guys with scores in the 30s including a 35 and a couple of 38s. I was surprised. It was tough but we fought back to create some positive momentum."

Four Mountain Hawks finished in the top 20 in the 66-player field, led by freshman Johnny Hsu, who tied for fifth place at 152 (76-76). Hsu shot 35 on the back nine after opening with a 41 Friday afternoon. Freshman Eamon Marone tied for 14th place at 157 (76-79), including a two over par 38 on Saturday.

Sophomore Billy Johns and junior Brendan Worthy both tied for 20th place at 157. Johns shot 79-78 while Worthy shot 78-79.

Lehigh's fifth scoring player was freshman Lee Hammerschmidt, who followed an opening round 79 with an 87 and finished in 55th place at 166.

Three Mountain Hawks competed as individuals, led by senior Dave Olexson, who tied for 28th place at 158 (77-81). Freshman Max Redetzke finished at 165 (81-84) to tie for 49th place while freshman Tim Wolak finished in 60th place at 172 (88-84).

Villanova's Lucas Trim was the individual medalist, with an impressive final score of even par 144. Trim opened with a 70 and finished his second round at 74 to defeat Bucknell's Connor O'Brien by three strokes.

While Lehigh finished 14 strokes behind Bucknell, the Mountain Hawks finished three ahead of third place Siena and four of fourth place Lafayette.

The Lehigh Invitational marked the final tournament of Lehigh's fall season. The Mountain Hawks will begin their spring campaign in March.

"We probably have the most talent we've ever had," D'Alberto said. "We didn't play our best but I think this helps. If we can get this going in the right direction we can have a good spring season."
