BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team is headed to Florida to open up its spring season over Spring Break. The Mountain Hawks were originally scheduled to play in a tournament hosted by Manhattan, but the Jaspers have pulled out of hosting. Instead, Lehigh will join Patriot League rivals Bucknell and Navy, plus UMass-Lowell for the four-team Patriot Spring Intercollegiate, beginning Monday on the Estates Course at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
The 36-hole event will feature 18 holes of play both Monday and Tuesday in what will be Lehigh's spring season debut.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a fall campaign where they played in four tournaments, capped by a second place finish at the Lehigh Invitational. Lehigh also dropped the Presidents' Cup to rival Lafayette by a 9-7 score in match play. The Mountain Hawks' second-best tournament finish was a seventh place finish out of 14 teams in the Rutgers Invitational.
Head coach Henry D'Alberto has an inexperienced eight-player roster with just one senior, David Olexson, and one junior, Brendan Worthy. The roster also only features one sophomore, Billy Johns, while the rest of the team is comprised by five freshmen: Lee Hammerschmidt, Johnny Hsu, Eamon Marone, Max Redetzke and Tim Wolak.
Hsu led the Mountain Hawks in stroke average (76.1) over 11 fall rounds and was Lehigh's top performer at the Colgate Invitational (T-13th) and the Lehigh Invitational (T-5th). Johns led Lehigh at the Rutgers Invitational (T-22nd) and the Tuxedo Autumn Invitational (T-25th).
Marone owns Lehigh's second lowest stroke average, at 76.4 over just eight rounds. Johns is third at 76.9.
The low round for the fall came from Redetzke, who carded a 70 in the final round of the Rutgers Invitational.
The Patriot Spring Intercollegiate is the first of six spring events for the Mountain Hawks. Later this month, Lehigh will play at Villanova's Wildcat Invitational, where Johns will look to defend his individual title from last year.
In April, Lehigh will play in the Lafayette Invitational (April 3-4) and La Salle's Finegan Invitational (April 18). The Mountain Hawks will also play 18 holes of stroke play against rival Lafayette at Silver Creek Country Club in Hellertown, Pa. on April 26 before shifting focus to the Patriot League Championship at the Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis, Md. April 30-May 1.
