Lehigh hosts FDU Saturday seeking fourth straight win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Mountain Hawks' men's tennis team looks to build on their 3-0 start Saturday as they welcome non-league opponent Fairleigh Dickinson to the Lewis Tennis Center. After shutting out St. Francis (Pa.) 7-0 last weekend the Mountain Hawks will look to continue their strong start to the season while looking to extend their home winning streak which stands at 16 straight.

The Mountain Hawks recorded its second shutout in as many years against Saint Francis, while improving to 3-0 against the Red Flash in their last three meetings.Â

Lehigh's No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Ricardo Prince and freshman Graham Lehman collected their first career victory as they defeated Plamen Avuski and Kyle Korus 6-2 to open the match. Â The No. 2 doubles team of junior Ben Gilman and freshman Tyler Hansen clinched the doubles point as they rolled to a 6-4 victory over Lawson Barter and Sergio Carvajal. Â The No. 1 doubles match did not finish as Lehigh's team of senior Mark Goldberg and junior Mitchell Peterson faced a 5-4 deficit before play was stopped.

Three of the six singles matches went to either three sets or a third set ten point tiebreak. Senior Timur Chernykh posted a straight set win at No. 5 singles, while Mitchell Peterson bounced back after dropping the second set 5-6, to clinch the match for the Mountain Hawks winning the deciding set 6-0 against Eli Cerdan at No. 3 singles.

 Freshman Jason Sutker picked up his first collegiate victory defeating Korus 10-3 in the super tie break, while Tyler Hansen needed three sets to down Lawson Barter.Â

The Knights enter the contest with a 0-1 record after dropping their season opener against NJIT 6-1 last weekend.Â

The Mountain Hawks have won the last two meetings against FDU, winning a 7-0 decision in 2011 and downing the Knights 4-3 in the most recent meeting in 2012.

Saturday's match begins at 11 a.m. in the Lewis Tennis Center. Lehigh's next match will come against Mount St. Mary's Sunday February 16 inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks were scheduled to visit Penn State this Sunday but the match has been postponed due to the threat of inclement weather.
