Moyar Qualifies for Consolation Final To Lead Lehigh at U.S. Nationals

GREENSBORO, N.C. ā Sophomore Jacob Moyar became the first Lehigh swimmer ever to qualify for a consolation final as the Lehigh swimming and diving teams wrapped-up competition Saturday at the 2014 AT&T Winter National Championships at the Greensboro Aquatics Complex. Moyer reached the "C" final in the 200 yard butterfly to lead the contingent of six Mountain Hawks who competed against some of the top swimmers in the country.

Moyar qualified for the "C" final with a time of 1:49.13 in his preliminary heat, which was good enough to put him in 22nd place out of 63 total swimmers. In the consolation finals, Moyar finished with a time of 1:49.65 and finished in fourth place in his heat. Moyar was among some of the best swimmers in the nation, including Dylan Bosch of the University of Michigan, who currently holds the second fastest time in the 200 fly at U.S. Nationals.

Earlier in the four-day event, Moyar also competed in the 500 free where he finished the race with a time of 4:36.43, and the 400 IM, finishing with a time of 3:59.23.

Sophomore Kevin Huntley finished competition in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:03.97, which earned him a 50th place finish out of 79 swimmers. Sophomore Jamal Willis also fared well at U.S. Nationals, finishing the 50 free in 20.40, which was good enough for 46th place out of 101 swimmers. Also present in the 50 free was Nathan Adrian, a three-time Olympic Gold medalist and American record holder in the 50 free and 100 free.

On the women's side, the Mountain Hawks were able to compete against some of the toughest competition they will see as well. Junior Courtney Patterson finished U.S. Nationals with a time of 4:27.79 and a 54th place finish out of 63 swimmers in the 400 IM. In addition, senior Alissa Leung was able to pick up two solid times in the 100 and 200 backstroke. Leung finished in 73rd place out of 125 swimmers with a time of 56.60 in the 100 backstroke, and 75th out of 96 swimmers with a time of 2:02.78 in the 200 backstroke. Sophomore Cora Summerfield rounded out the women's group with a 56th place finish out of 69 swimmers and a time of 2:04.22 in the 200 butterfly. Summerfield went up against swimmers such as Kelsi Worrell of the University of Louisville, who competed at U.S. Junior Nationals and was the NCAA runner up in the 100 butterfly last year.
