Lehigh men fall to Army in first meet of New Year

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In its first action of the new year, the Lehigh men's swimming and diving team dropped a 141-98 decision to visiting Army Friday at Jacobs Pool. The Mountain Hawks managed to win six events against the Black Knights with sophomores Jacob Moyar and Jamal Willis winning two apiece but there were also five events where a Mountain Hawk swimmer could not crack the top two. The loss drops Lehigh to 3-4 overall.

Willis swept the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events, including a time of 20.60 seconds in the 50 which broke his own pool record. He added a win in the 100 free in 46.69.

In his first action since qualifying for the C final in the 200 fly at USA Swimming AT&T Winter Nationals last month in Greensboro, N.C., Moyar won the 400 yard individual medley in 4:01.53 and added a win in the 200 fly in 1:52.44.

Sophomore Justin White posted Lehigh's other individual win, taking the 200 free in 1:42.52, while Lehigh's Danny Bennett, Owen Dunbar, Eric Sherwood and White captured first place points in the 800 free relay with Army competing unscored in the final event.

Senior diver Dan Bateman captured second place points in both events, scoring 230.55 in the one meter and 228.22 in the three meter.

The Mountain Hawks will visit Patriot League foe Loyola on Saturday January 17 for a 1 p.m. meet. The Lehigh men will also be in action on Sunday January 18 as the Mountain Hawks visit NJIT.
