BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After a lengthy layoff from competition, the Lehigh swimming and diving teams return to action Friday when the Mountain Hawks welcome the Black Knights of Army to Jacobs Pool. Diving events begin at 3 p.m. with swimming events to follow at 5 p.m. in Lehigh's first action of the new year.
The Mountain Hawks last competed as a full squad on November 21 when they swept rival Lafayette for the seventh straight year in a meet that was hosted by Lehman College in the Bronx, N.Y. Two weeks later six Mountain Hawks competed at the USA Swimming AT&T Winter Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. Sophomore Jacob Moyar made history, qualifying for the "C" final in the 200 yard butterfly while also competing in the 500 free and 400 IM. Sophomore Kevin Huntley competed in the 200 yard breaststroke while classmate Jamal Willis swam the 50 free.
On the women's side, junior Courtney Patterson competed in the 400 IM, senior Alissa Leung swam in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events, and sophomore Cora Summerfield competed in the 200 fly.
More recently, the Mountain Hawks spent a week in Orlando, Fla. for winter training to gear up for a busy second half slate that includes four straight weekends of competitions before a break for the Patriot League Championships at Bucknell February 18-21.
The Lehigh women enter Friday's meet with a 4-2 dual record while the men are 3-3. The Mountain Hawk women own wins over Holy Cross, West Chester, Rider and Lafayette while the men are 3-1 against league opponents with wins over Holy Cross, Colgate and Lafayette.
Army also comes in off a break following a rivalry meet. The Black Knights were swept by Navy on December 21 and enjoyed a winter training trip to Fort Buchanan in Puerto Rico to prepare for the second half. Army's men are 3-3 on the season while the women come in at 2-3. Both teams also finished fourth at Boston University's Terrier Invitational in November.
The Black Knights have swept the last three duals against Lehigh with the Mountain Hawk women last winning in 2011. Lehigh has never defeated Army on the men's side with the Black Knights winning all 43 previous meets.
Following Friday's meet, Lehigh will visit Patriot League rival Loyola on Saturday January 17, with the men also visiting NJIT the following day.
