Mountain Hawks come up just short in 122-109 loss to visiting Army

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's swimming and diving team held its own against Army but a 26-0 advantage on the diving boards propelled the visiting Black Knights to a 122-109 win over the Mountain Hawks Friday at Jacobs Pool. Lehigh won six of the 13 events on the meet and set two pool records. Sophomore Kaitlyn Ruffing swept the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events to pace the Mountain Hawks, who fall to 4-3 on the season.

Lehigh started the meet strong with wins in four of the first five events, but with freshman Emily Speakman a late scratch on the diving boards the Mountain Hawks fell despite a strong fight in the swimming events.

Individually, Ruffing's meet began with a win in the 50 free in 23.86 seconds. She later set a Jacobs Pool record in leading a top three sweep of the 100 free with a time of 51.99. Freshman Julianne Koch and junior Carolyn Koch finished second and third behind Ruffing.

Julianne Koch won the 200 free in 1:53.03 with classmate Meghan Thompson finishing second. Another freshman, Sydney Bornstein, won the 200 yard butterfly in 2:07.68 with senior Mary Caitlin Samuels finishing second.

Lehigh was also strong in the relays. Ruffing teamed with senior Alissa Leung, junior Melissa Feeney and sophomore Kelly Carroll to win the opening 400 medley relay in 3:57.33. In the final event of the meet, the Koch sisters, Thompson and Carroll set a pool record in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:37.50.

The Mountain Hawks will visit Patriot League foe Loyola on Saturday January 17 for a 1 p.m. meet.
