BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh senior punter Tim Divers earned league and national recognition Monday for his efforts in the Mountain Hawks' 24-10 win over Columbia on Saturday. Divers was named Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week and later added national Special Teams Player of the Week honors from the Sports Network. Divers helped control field position for the Mountain Hawks on a windy day in New York Saturday, as Lehigh defeated Columbia to move to 5-1 on the season.
The Patriot League award is the fourth of Divers' career. The Wayne, N.J. native was honored three times as a sophomore in 2011.
Divers punted four times for 183 yards against Columbia, an average of 45.8 yards per kick. Two of his punts were downed inside the Lions' 20 yard line.
With Lehigh clinging to a 17-10 lead in the third quarter Divers capitalized on the wind at his back, unleashing a season-long 64 yard punt that was downed at the Columbia one yard line. Lehigh's defense responded with a three-and-out and Columbia's Paul Delaney could only muster a 26 yard punt into the stiff breeze. The Mountain Hawks capitalized on the good field position to score an insurance touchdown to re-establish a 14-point cushion.
For the season, Divers has punted 20 times, averaging a career-best 41.8 yards per punt. The three-year starter has six punts of 50 yards or more and has placed nine inside the opponents' 20 yard line. Just nine of Divers' punts have been returned, for an average of just 3.8 yards.
Two other Mountain Hawks earned honorable mention recognition from the league for their efforts in the win over the Lions.
Senior wide receiver Lee Kurfis was honored after tying a school record with 14 receptions against Columbia. He gained 130 yards and scored two touchdowns on the day as well. Kurfis is the leading receiver in the FCS in terms of receptions (64), receptions per game (10.7), receiving yards (934) and receiving yards per game (155.7).
Junior defensive lineman Tim Newton received an honorable mention after leading Lehigh's defensive effort with ten tackles and two sacks against the Lions. The Mountain Hawks defense limited the Lions to just nine completions and 71 net passing yards. For the season, Newton has 34 tackles and leads Lehigh with four tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.
Despite the win, Lehigh dropped slightly in both major FCS polls. The Mountain Hawks are now ranked 16th in the FCS Coaches Poll and 18th in the Sports Network FCS Top 25.
The Mountain Hawks return to Goodman Stadium on Saturday to face the Georgetown Hoyas on Family Day. Kickoff is set for just after 12:30 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during normal business hours.
