No. 8 Lehigh downs Clarion 27-12 for first dual win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman Anthony Salupo pinned Cameron Moran in his varsity dual debut as No. 8 Lehigh won seven of ten bouts to defeat Clarion 27-12 for its first dual win of the season in the final dual of a tri-meet Sunday inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Freshman Mason Beckman and junior Robert Hamlin also posted bonus point wins for the Mountain Hawks, who are now 1-2 on the dual season.
“It was a better effort, said Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro. “It still needs to be better than that. The bottom line is if you don't take shots you're not going to score. We tried to shake the lineup a little bit and try to get people to get on those leg attacks. The last three years we've been built on leg attacks but haven't been doing that at all this year.”
In Sunday's opening dual, Lehigh and No. 7 Illinois split ten bouts, but four major decisions proved to be the difference as the Fighting Illini pulled out a 22-18 win over the Mountain Hawks. Illinois also defeated Clarion 34-13 on the day to move to 6-0 in duals, while Clarion is now 0-2.
Lehigh looked to bounce back against Clarion and Beckman got the Mountain Hawks off to a strong start with an 18-3 technical fall win over Trey Hicks at 125. Beckman successfully built a lead with nine of his 18 points coming in the third period.Clarion's Joe Waltko put the Golden Eagles on the board with a major decision over freshman Chris Dinnien, but consecutive wins from sophomore Steve Dutton and Salupo put Lehigh up 14-4.
Dutton won a wild 12-10 sudden victory decision over Tyler Bedelyon at 141. After struggling early against Bedelyon's length, Dutton led 9-5 in the third period. Bedelyon roared back with five points as he countered a Dutton takedown with a flying cement job. Following an injury stoppage and a timeout for blood, Dutton was forced to ride out the final seconds of regulation, as his 2:21 riding time advantage allowed the match to go to sudden victory, where Dutton secured the winning takedown after 27 seconds.
Salupo followed with a takedown and early two-point near fall against Moran at 149 before securing the fall in 2:18.
“We needed a spark,” Santoro said of the decision to wrestle Salupo. “We wanted to get some guys some experience in Grace Hall and he responded. He loves to compete and that's what we want guys who love to compete and love to score points.”
Clarion posted consecutive wins to pull within 14-12 as James Fleming won by technical fall over Brian Tanen at 157 and Bekzod Abdurakhmanov upset senior Brandon Hatchett 6-4 in sudden victory at 165.
With the Golden Eagles within two points, Lehigh was able to capture the final four bouts to secure their first dual win of the season. Freshman Nate Brown won a 4-0 decision over Ryan Darch at 174, while Hamlin followed with an impressive 12-2 major over Steve Cressley.
At 197, senior Kadeem Samuels made his season dual debut with a 7-3 decision over Alex Thomas. Senior Zach Rey closed out the lengthy day when with a 3-0 decision over Quintas McCorkle at heavyweight.
Earlier in the day Illinois used five bonus wins to hand the Mountain Hawks a four-point dual defeat. Third-ranked B.J. Futrell pinned Lehigh junior Alex Abreu at 133, while Illinois' four other win came by major decision. The Illini won four of the first five bouts to lead 18-3 at intermission. Dutton had Lehigh's only win in the first half with a 6-0 decision over Tucker Armstrong.
Needing wins and bonus points in the second half of the dual Hatchett earned Lehigh six points after winning by injury default over Conrad Polz, Hatchett led 2-0 and was looking for near fall points when Polz called an injury timeout and eventually defaulted with a leg injury at the 159 mark.
Fourth-ranked Illini grappler Jordan Blanton helped Illinois put the dual out of reach with a 17-7 major decision over Brown at 174.
The Mountain Hawks needed bonus points to try and come back from 13 down, but Hamlin, senior Joe Kennedy could only muster wins by decision as Lehigh fell by four. Kennedy went down to the wire against Mario Gonzalez but a late inside trip in the third period resulted in the winning takedown in Kennedy's 4-2 win.
Lehigh will return to action next Saturday at the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. The Mountain Hawks will face Arizona State at 11:15 a.m., Purdue at 1:40 p.m. and North Carolina at 3:30 p.m. Audio of all three duals will be broadcast on Lehighsports.com.
