Lehigh Wrestlers Go 5-1 at Session 1 of NCAA Championships

CLEVELAND – Lehigh wrestlers went 5-1 Thursday afternoon as the NCAA Championships opened up at Rocket Arena. A fall from graduate student Sheldon Seymour at 125 and a technical fall by sophomore Luke Stanich at 141 helped push the Mountain Hawks to 8.5 points, good for 11th place after Session 1.

Seymour, the No. 4 seed, pinned Pitt's Tyler Chappell in 5:38 in Lehigh's first bout of the day. He opened the scoring with a second period reversal and led 2-1 going into the third when he turned Chappell for two points before securing the fall. Seymour will face No. 13 Stevo Poulin of Iowa State Thursday night.

Stanich racked up six takedowns in a 21-6 technical fall victory over Arizona State's Pierson Manville. He scored two in the first period, one in the second, and then three in the third, plus an escape, a stalling point and riding time. Stanich will face No. 21 Tyler Wells of Oklahoma in the round of 16.

Sophomore Logan Rozynski won a 6-1 decision over Buffalo's Kaleb Burgess at 157. Rozynski scored a late first period takedown and a second period reversal while adding riding time advantage. He will face No. 7 Kannon Webster of Illinois in the second round.

Senior Max Brignola picked up his first career NCAA Tournament win, outlasting Indiana's Tyler Lillard 2-2 on riding time in the tiebreakers at 165. Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, Lillard had two takedowns erased after review. Brignola rode out the first half of the 30 second tiebreaker and defended well in the second half to win on the 30 seconds of riding time advantage. Next up for Brignola is NC State's Will Denny.

Junior Rylan Rogers edged West Virginia's Ian Bush 8-7 to advance to the round of 16 at 184. Rogers trailed 3-1 after one period but scored a pair of second period takedowns that proved to be the difference. He will next face top seed Rocco Welsh of Penn State.

The only blemish for Lehigh in Session 1 was heavyweight Nathan Taylor, who was knocked off by Rutgers' Hunter Catka 6-3 in sudden victory. Taylor rode out the second period and escaped early in the third to take the lead, before Catka scored a takedown. Taylor escaped and maintained his riding time advantage to send the bout to overtime tied 3-3, but Catka scored again in the sudden victory period to send Taylor to the consolations.

The NCAA Championships continue Thursday night with session two, featuring the round of 16 and first round consolations. Action begins at 7 p.m. with television coverage on ESPN and streaming coverage of every mat available on ESPN+.
