BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh football program held its annual postseason banquet on Saturday evening at Iacocca Hall on Lehigh’s Mountaintop Campus to look back at the 2006 season and honor members of that team. Over 300 players, parents, alumni, friends, coaches and support staff were on hand for the event.
Several Lehigh program awards were handed out for individual accomplishments from the 2006 season, in addition to the recognizing of certain players and coaches who received awards from national agencies.
Senior Jason Russell took home the program’s highest honor as he received the Scholar-Athlete award. Given to the student-athlete who best combines success in both academics and athletics, Russell boasts a 2.95 grade point average as an urban studies major, while having started every game on the offensive line for Lehigh in 2006, after seeing significant time in 2005.
Senior running back Marques Thompson was the recipient of the Archibald Johnston Cup, given to the most valuable player in the Lehigh program. An All-Patriot League second team selection, Thompson led Lehigh and ranked among the league leaders with 904 total rushing yards to go along with six touchdowns and 196 yards receiving.
Senior defensive lineman Eric Rakus earned the James P. McConologue Award given to the player that is "all football." Rakus had a stellar campaign in 2006, garnering All-League status after registering 54 total tackles, including a team-best ten for loss. The
Senior offensive lineman John Reese was named the Alexander G. Hahalis award winner as the team’s best lineman, offensive or defensive. Reese was a team captain and two-time all-league selection, starting every game over the past two seasons. He helped the offensive line set the tone for the Lehigh offense – the most potent in the league.
The Barry Fetterman award, given to the player or players who best exemplify loyalty, dedication, and unselfishness was awarded to seniors Greg Fay and Pete Morelli. Both Fay, a fullback, and Morelli, an offensive lineman, played integral roles in the team’s success.
Senior defensive back Julain Austin received the John C. Whitehead “Big LU” award given to the player that combines leadership and performance. A captain in 2006,
