NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. – Junior Emily Roth’s new school record in the pole vault and freshman Franklin Johnson’s IC4A qualifying performance in the triple jump were just two of the many top performances Lehigh’s men’s and women’s track and field teams had at the Lafayette-Rider Invitational held on Friday night at the Armory. Additionally, sophomore Sarah Serwo and senior Victor Vientos each placed first in their respective events at the meet, which was the Mountain Hawks’ final tune-up before the Patriot League Championship Meet at Army next weekend.
“We had a very good night both on the track and in the field,” said head coach Matt Utesch. “There were multiple personal bests in both the track and the field events. We are definitely peaking at the right time.”
Roth cleared a personal best 11’3¾” in the pole vault, replacing freshman Ashlee Atwell’s record of 11’1” that was established at the Lehigh Season Opener earlier this season. Roth tied for second in the pole vault with Moravian’s Anna Heim.
Meanwhile, Serwo edged out Francine Ward of UMBC to take first place in the 500 meter dash. Serwo finished the race in a time of 1:17.30, which was 0.13 of a second ahead of Ward. Serwo’s time is not only a personal best, but is also the program’s second-fastest time in the 500 meter dash.
In addition to Roth’s mark and Serwo’s time, as a team, the Mountain Hawk women set season-best times in four other events. Junior Rachel Stewart finished the 60 meter dash in 8.04 seconds, while senior Nicole Montegary recorded the season’s top 200 meter dash time of 26.20 seconds. Sophomore Lindsey Corbetta became the first Lehigh female to run sub-1:00 in the 400 meter dash this season as she finished the race in 59.38 seconds. The 4x400 meter relay team of Corbetta, Montegary, Serwo and sophomore Jennifer Therkorn ran the season’s top time of 4:05.15.
On the men’s side, Johnson became the first Mountain Hawk to qualify for the IC4A meet by leaping a career-best 47’1½“ in the triple jump. The qualifying standard for IC4As is 46’11”. Johnson now has the team’s top three marks in the triple jump on the season.
Running much of the race by himself, Vientos finished the 3000 meter run in a time of 8:37.38 to take first place. It was Vientos’ second time running the 3000 meter run this season. His first time was at last weekend’s New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory where he finished in a time of 8:38.37.
As a team, the Mountain Hawk men saw top season performances record in four other running events and three other field events. On the track, senior David Falk ran a season-best 22.43 seconds in the 200 meter dash, classmate senior Greg Horn ran the team’s top time in the 500 meter dash (1:06.29) and junior Kyle Manning’s 1:55.41 performance in the 800 meter dash is the team’s top time for the season. The 4x400 meter relay team of seniors Brian Ahean, Kevin Ahearn, Falk and sophomore Scott Robinson ran a season-best 3:24.25.
In the field, freshman Khalil Uqdah jumped 14’9” in the pole vault—a new personal best and 9¾“ better than his previous personal best of 13’11¼”. Freshman Nicholas Ray threw a colleigate-best 48’11¾” in the shot put, while junior Mark Mattei tossed 48’9” in the weight throw.
