BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men’s lacrosse team returns home on Saturday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks play host to the Yale Bulldogs at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Lehigh played three times last week, including a two game swing in Denver where the Brown and White competed at the DU Face-Off Classic. The Mountain Hawks downed Air Force 14-13 in dramatic fashion on March 6, while on March 7 Lehigh came up just short, 8-7, versus Denver.
In Lehigh’s game versus Air Force Cameron Lao-Gosney and Dante Fantoni scored three goals apiece, with Lao-Gosney scoring the game-winner with no time remaining. In the contest at Denver senior Brian Bienemann scored twice and handed out an assist.
On the season Adam Johnston leads the Mountain Hawks with nine goals, while Roman Lao-Gosney has found the back of the net five times. Freshman David DiMaria leads the Mountain Hawks with six assists and classmate Dante Fantoni is right on his heels with four helpers. Ryan Snyder had a terrific trip to the Mile High State and currently leads the Mountain Hawks with 16 ground balls and is 23-of-45 in the X. Will Scudder has won 34-of-60 face-offs and scooped up seven ground balls. Senior Evan Guerrero continues to do a terrific job on defense with 11 caused turnovers, but Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese knows that his senior captain and the entire Lehigh “D” will be tested this weekend.
“Simply put, Yale is a very good team,” Cassese said. “They are well coached, they play with discipline, and they play with emotion.” He continued, “Their offense is scoring at an incredible rate and playing with the utmost confidence right now. The challenge is out to our defense. We need them to step up!”
In goal for Lehigh freshman Dan Carr continues to be solid for the Mountain Hawks with 49 saves in 285 minutes of work.
Yale comes into Saturday with a perfect 3-0 record, which includes wins over Holy Cross, Massachusetts and Presbyterian. The Bulldogs are averaging over 13 goals per game, led by Matt Gibson with nine and Brian Douglass with eight. Gibson also leads the Ivy League school with seven assists, while Max Rodman has scooped up a team-leading 13 ground balls and won 45-of-68 in the X. In goal for the Bulldogs Jonathan Falcone has sent back 25 shots in 163 minutes of action this season.
Lehigh and Yale will be meeting for the eighth time on Saturday with the Bulldogs leading the series 5-2. The last time the teams met was in 2003, while Lehigh’s last victory over Yale came all the way back in 1918.
Lehigh and Yale will get things started at 1:00 on Saturday afternoon from the Ulrich Sports Complex. Live video coverage of the game will be shown on Lehighsports.com.
