Strong Second Half Powers #18/19 Army Past Lehigh

WEST POINT, N.Y. - No. 18/19 Army defeated Lehigh 14-11 Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Lehigh's three-game winning streak came to an end as the Mountain Hawks fell to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in Patriot League play. With the win, Army improved to 7-3 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Finn Morgan paced the Mountain Hawks offensively, recording a hat trick for the eighth time this season. Andrew Kelly and Colin French each added two goals for Lehigh, while Kelly also led the team with two assists in the loss.
Connor Riley turned in another solid effort at the faceoff X, winning 16-of-24 draws while securing a team-high nine ground balls. On the defensive end, Ricardo Checo caused two turnovers and added three ground balls, while Harrison Vassel chipped in four ground balls for the Mountain Hawks, which lead the team.
Luke Breslin opened the scoring just 30 seconds into the contest, giving Lehigh an early 1-0 lead. Army responded with four straight goals to take a 4-1 advantage midway through the first quarter. Morgan and French each found the back of the net late in the period to cut the deficit to one, as the Mountain Hawks trailed 4-3 heading into the second quarter.
Lehigh took control in the second quarter, outscoring Army 5-2 in the period. Riley won the opening faceoff, leading to Luke Winkler's game-tying goal that evened the score at 4-4. Lehigh then scored four of the next six goals, with two from Finn Morgan and one apiece from Jack Archer and Peter Theodoropoulos, to take an 8-6 lead into halftime.
Army controlled the third quarter, opening the period on a 5-0 run, including two goals from Drew Miller, who led the team with three. Colin French was able to find the back of the net with three seconds remaining to cut the deficit to two, as Lehigh trailed 11-9 heading into the fourth quarter.
Kelly and Morgan scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 11 with five minutes remaining. Army tightened up defensively down the stretch, with Sean Byrne turning in a strong performance in goal, finishing with 14 saves. The Black Knights scored three goals over the final five minutes to secure the 14-11 victory.
