Lehigh third in Patriot League preseason poll

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Patriot League announced its 2006 women’s tennis preseason poll on Thursday and the Mountain Hawks were picked to finish third. Lehigh garnered 36 points in the poll, which is voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information directors. The Mountain Hawks also received one first place in the poll. Lehigh finished third in the Patriot League a year ago with a 10-9 record.

The Mountain Hawks return six players from last year’s team, led by junior Gwen Dwyer, a 2005 All-Patriot League first team performer and senior co-captain Starrine Foster. Sophomore Alexis Jacobi is also expected to be a major contributor and Lehigh also boasts three freshmen who will provide depth to the program.

Defending champion Army topped the poll with 50 points and 10 of a possible 12 first place votes.

Lehigh will open the 2006 spring season on Sunday, February 5 when the Mountain Hawks will host Temple and Towson in a tri-meet at the Lewis Tennis Center.
