Lehigh sends five on to finals at EIWA Championships

Sophomore Matt Ciasulli was the first Mountain Hawk to push through to the finals. Ciasulli won a gritty 4-0 decision over Navy’s Sam Gray. He will take on Cornell’s defending national champion Travis Lee in a rematch of last year’s finals. Cory Cooperman then moved into the finals at 141using a late reversal and three point near-fall to score an 11-3 major decision over Army’s Patrick Simpson. Cooperman will face second seed Nate Gulosh of Navy in the finals.
The Mountain Hawks ran into some trouble at 149. Fifth seed Matt Anderson could not get past Cornell’s Dustin Manotti. The top-seeded and No. 1 ranked Manotti took the bout in a 10-2 major decision.
Lehigh would get back on track at 157 and 165 as Derek Zinck and Troy Letters advanced to the finals with victories, Letters winning his 32nd consecutive bout by major decision over Navy’s Craig Dziewiatowski. In a bout that could go a long way in determining the team championship Lehigh’s second seeded Travis Frick lost a tough 3-1 sudden victory decision to Cornell’s No. 3 seed Joe Mazzurco. Each man only mustered an escape during regulation, but in the sudden victory period Mazzurco got a hold of Frick’s leg and was able to score the decisive takedown.

Both Lehigh wrestlers who were not in the semifinals emerged victorious in the consolation quarters. Andrew Rizzi topped Alex Uzstics of Navy while Brian LaMay improved to 3-1 at the EIWA championships, with a decision over Dan Gallagher of
Rizzi was not as fortunate in the consolation semis, losing a 10-5 decision to 2001 EIWA champ Mason Lenhard of
At 174 Frick gave up an early takedown before rallying to top Dustin Wiles of Penn. LaMay will also advanced to the third place match with a win over Army’s Luke Calvert. At heavyweight, Weibel was not as fortunate. The sophomore from Quakertown was pinned by American’s Adam LoPiccolo.
In the placement matches Frick qualified for nationals, scoring two first period takedowns en route to an 8-3 win over American’s Daniel Waters and third place at 174 pounds. Brian LaMay got another shot at
