Mountain Hawks finish competition in three meets

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. – Lehigh’s men’s and women’s track and field teams took part in three different meets this weekend, making trips to New York City, N.Y. for the elite New Balance Collegiate Invitational, East Stroudsburg for the DeSchriver Invitational and then to Cornell for the Cornell Open. No team scores were recorded at any of this weekend’s three meets.

On the women’s side, there were six new season-best times recorded as seniors Jenni Schappert and Carolyn House, sophomores Shannon Alejandro, Sarah Serwo and Jennifer Therkorn and freshman Jillian Randolph all recorded season-best times in their respective events. Competing on Friday, House competed in the 5000 meter run and finished the race in a time of 18:47.94, Therkorn finished the women’s 1000 meter run in a time of 3:02.85 and Serwo ran 2:18.73 in the women’s 800 meter run. In the women’s 3000 meter run on Saturday, Schappert was second in her heat, finishing in a time of 10:06.08 with less than a second separating second and fifth place. Meanwhile, freshman Kaitlin Grimm ran her best collegiate time in the 3000 meter run, finishing the race in a time of 10:11.39. Alejandro competed in the women’s mile on Saturday, running 5:09.83 in the race.
On the men’s side, there were five new season-best times and one new season-best field mark set. Seniors David Falk, Victor Vientos and Sean Swift, junior Kyle Manning and sophomore Garrett Zambrows all ran season-best times, while freshman Franklin Johnson set the season’s top mark in the triple jump. Additionally, Swift and senior Brendan Glover both finished in the top ten of the men’s 5000 meter run on Friday, finishing in times of 14:51.53 and 15:03.31, respectively. Also on Friday, Manning ran a 2:30.43 in the 1000 meter run, while Zambrows ran a 1:55.95 in the 800 meter run. On Saturday, Vientos competed in the 3000 meter run, finishing the race in a time of 8:38.47. Meanwhile, Falk ran the 200 meter dash in a time of 22.67 seconds. Johnson leapt 48’8¼” in the triple jump, placing eighth.
At the Cornell Invitational, several key performances were recorded including junior Rachel Stewart tying her season-best 8.10 seconds in the 60 meter dash finals for the third time and senior Nicole Montegary running a season-best 60.68 seconds in the 400 meter dash. Freshman Ashlee Atwell tied for first place with Cornell’s Joan Casey and Shannon Miller in the pole vault by clearing a height of 10’8”. Junior Emily Roth also cleared 10’8” in the pole vault, but finished fourth due to the number of misses. Senior Greg Horn placed first in the 500 meter dash, finishing in a time of 1:07.45, just .03 of a second faster than second place. Additionally, freshman Matt Foley competed in the 800 meter run, finishing in a time of 1:59.85—just two seconds off first place.
At the DeSchriver Invitational, three Mountain Hawk men placed in the top ten of the 5000 meter run. Sophomore Leo Smith led Lehigh with a fourth place finish in the event, running 15:37.79. Classmate Daniel DeWitt’s time of 15:51.38 finished sixth, while junior Martin Michael placed tenth with a time of 16:02.16. In the men’s 800 meter run, junior Richard Little placed seventh, completing the race in a time of 2:02.34. On the women’s side, freshman Kim Simonson missed qualifying for the finals of the 55 meter dash by one place, running 7.61 seconds in the preliminaries and tying for seventh. Meanwhile, senior Kirsten Wert and sophomore Elizabeth Robinson had top five placings at the meet. Robinson’s 3:12.52 in the 1000 meter run finished third, while Kirsten Wert ran 11:11.41 in the 3000 meter run to finish fourth.
