Mountain Hawks Fall To George Mason In Series Opener 7-4

TYSONS, Va. – Lehigh baseball opened their weekend series against the George Mason Patriots on Friday evening from Capital One Park in Tysons, Virginia. Playing as the home team, the Mountain Hawks fell by a score of 7-4.

Lehigh (2-5) played George Mason (3-5) in Tysons as opposed to at the Patriots' home field in Fairfax due to weather impacting the field's condition. Right-hander Owen Stewart got the win for George Mason, striking out six batters while allowing two runs in 5.0 innings. Reliever Sam Fairhurst was credited with the loss for the Mountain Hawks while Carter Kelsey earned the save for the Patriots.

Lehigh starter Christopher Nell faced some early adversity, as George Mason loaded the bases with no outs on the board. Despite this, Nell and the Mountain Hawks managed to escape the first inning only conceding one run. Edwin Betances delivered his first RBI of the season in the bottom of the second to tie the game 1-1.

The Mountain Hawks and Patriots traded quick innings from the top of the top of the third through the top of the fourth before Dom Patrizi's RBI single broke the tie for Lehigh. George Mason had a strong response in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs on a sac-fly and RBI single to regain a 3-2 advantage.

The Patriots added a run of insurance in the top of the sixth on a Lucas Alberti solo home run to lead 4-2. George Mason added additional runs in the top of the seventh and eighth innings, leaving Lehigh six outs to overcome a 6-2 deficit.

Lehigh found a spark in the bottom of the eighth, scoring two runs off RBIs from Ryan Cochran and Owen Walewander. However, the Patriots tacked on another run from a sac-fly in the top of the ninth to go back up by three. The Mountain Hawks got two runners on base with only one out in the bottom of the ninth, but ultimately the Patriots secured the final two outs to open the series with a win.

Patrizi, Carvelli, and Betances each finished the day with two hits. Aidan Quinn, Jack Frankovic, Ryan Davis, Ian Wirtz, and Walewander also recorded hits for the Mountain Hawks. First-years Ryan Holman and Declan Wilkes also appeared on the mound in addition to Nell and Fairhurst.

The Mountain Hawks will play game two of the series on Saturday, February 28 at 2 p.m. back on George Mason's campus in Fairfax.
