Patrizi's Go-Ahead Homer Splits Doubleheader With Bucknell

4/19/2025 7:21:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball kicked off a three-game weekend series at home against the Bucknell Bison on Saturday afternoon, playing two games at J. David Walker Field. The Mountain Hawks were defeated 7-3 in a seven-inning game one and pulled out a narrow 5-4 victory in game two.

Bucknell (14-23, 6-12 PL) starting pitcher Tyler O'Neill threw a complete 7.0 innings in game one, striking out three while allowing two earned runs in the win. Lehigh (18-19, 7-11 PL) starter Liam O'Hearen was credited with the loss after allowing four runs in the top of the first inning.

The Bison offense had a fast start to game one, adding four runs in the top of the first. Michael Trommer connected on a two-run homer to center field before Chris Morabito's two-RBI triple made it 4-0 Bison. The Mountain Hawks did respond the bottom half of the inning with Jake Whitlinger coming home on an error.

O'Neill kept the Mountain Hawk offense at bay, allowing only three hits through the first six innings. Bucknell took advantage of their solid play on the mound by scoring three additional runs in the game in the third, fourth and seventh innings. Andrew Kohl delivered a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh for Lehigh, but it would not be enough to overcome the deficit.

Whitlinger, Owen Walewander, Kohl and Dom Patrizi provided the hits in game one for Lehigh. Grady Golier, Ralph Gariano and Max Treonze also appeared on the mound for the Mountain Hawks.

Both of the pitchers of record were relievers in game two. Marcus Danchision got the win for Lehigh, tossing the final 4.0 innings with four strikeouts, zero runs and only one hit. The losing pitcher for Bucknell was Nick Mulvey after he conceded the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Bucknell once again scored first in game two, getting on the board in the second thanks to a sac-fly from Brady Karp. However, Lehigh responded in a big way in the bottom of the frame, sending three runs past home plate. A Patrizi RBI single, Robbie Carvelli RBI single and Whitlinger RBI single scored three for the home team. An additional RBI single from Justin Butler in the bottom of the third set the score at 4-1 through three.

Karp kept the Bison in the game in the top of the fourth with a two-RBI single to make it 4-3. The next inning, Luke Nascimento doubled home Billy Kender to tie the game at four apiece.

The Mountain Hawks and Bison traded three scoreless innings in a row, bringing us to the eighth inning. After Danchision retired the Bison in five batters, the Mountain Hawks looked to avoid playing a bottom of the ninth in the eighth. Patrizi connected on a solo home run to left field to give Lehigh a 5-4 lead, his first of the season. Danchision put down the Bison 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to secure the doubleheader split.

Whitlinger, Aidan Quinn, Walewander, Butler, Patrizi and Carvelli recorded hits for the Mountain Hawks in game two. Starter Noah Gyauch-Quirk and Jack Hamilton also pitched for Lehigh.

The Mountain Hawks and Bison will conclude the season series on Sunday, April 20 at 12 p.m. for a single game from J. David Walker Field.
