BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh men's soccer picked up its first win of the 2024 campaign, defeating Rider 1-0 Monday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Sophomore defender Trey Sheeler connected on the first and only goal of the day in the 43rd minute off of a free kick.
Sheeler's goal gave Lehigh a late first-half lead and that would be the only goal the Mountain Hawks would need to secure the win.
The Mountain Hawks remain undefeated at home with a record of 1-0-1. The Broncs dropped to 0-2 on the season.
'Tonight was a pretty gritty performance," said head coach Dean Koski. "It was a fairly physical match, but you have to grind these out. We defended well when we needed to defend, and I think our final third defending has been very good. I still think we can be better, but look, we're going to have to learn how to grind out games like this, and we didn't do this last year, so it's a positive sign."
Although Lehigh picked up a win, it was a pretty balanced stat sheet on Monday with Lehigh holding a slim 11-10 advantage in shots. Junior midfielder Beckett Wenger tallied a game-high of three shots. Both teams also tallied three corner kicks apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Gross recorded his second straight shutout of the season after tallying two saves on Monday. Rider goalkeeper Adam Salama was credited with three saves.

Not only did Monday's game mark Lehigh's first win of the season, but it also marked the first time the Mountain Hawks secured back-to-back shutouts since 2019 when they had two shutouts in the Patriot League Tournament.
Monday's game was another physical game that featured five yellow cards, with three of those yellow cards going to the Mountain Hawks.
"The biggest thing I have learned through the first two games is that we still need to be more disciplined," Koski added. "If we are going to be successful in the Patriot League, we can't start accumulating yellow cards with silly things like kicking the ball away. I want them to be more disciplined."
Lehigh will travel to Providence, R.I. to face Brown on Friday at 7 p.m. Friday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
