Mountain Hawks Suffer First Loss of Season

8/30/2024 10:00:00 PM | Men's Soccer

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Lehigh men's soccer suffered its first loss of the  2024 season, falling 2-1 to Brown Friday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field. With the loss, the Mountain Hawks dropped to 1-1-1 while the Bears picked up a win in their season opener.

Brown struck first, scoring 29 minutes into the game after Mads Stistrup Petersen found an open Mike Balleani on a restart. Sophomore forward Tommy Robertson tallied the equalizer in the 46th minute on a penalty kick, but Jamin Gogo Peters scored the game-winning goal for the Bears in the 69th minute.

"I was pleased with our mentality," said head coach Dean Koski "We gave up goals on a restart, but even when we went down, there was still a lot of energy. I was really proud of the guys' effort today."

Brown's opening goal marked the first goal that the Mountain Hawks conceded this season, as they held a clean sheet for the first two games of the season.

While Brown secured the win, the box score was fairly even with the Bears holding a 13-11 advantage in shots. Brown also edged Lehigh in shots on goal, 8-7.

First-year midfielder Giacomo Zizza had a team-high three shots.

Senior goalkeeper Blake Koski made his first start in net of the season and tallied six saves. Brown's Henrik Weiper finished with six saves as well.

Friday's game was very chippy with the Bears committing 22 fouls to Lehigh's 11.

"We have to be better on our restarts," Koski said. "We are continuing to learn and grow each game."

The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Monday when they host Rutgers at 6 p.m. Monday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
