BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh men's soccer returned to the Ulrich Sports Complex on Saturday evening to host the UMBC Retrievers. The Mountain Hawks and Retrievers played in a defensive battle that ended in a 0-0 draw.
"I thought our second half was better than our first half in terms of creating some chances," said Ingrassia Family men's head soccer coach Dean Koski. "I think our guys settled in and did a good job playing the feet. When you have a shutout and a draw at home, it's never a bad thing. We want to try to get results here in the Patriot League, and I thought this was a good game for us."
Lehigh (0-2-2) and UMBC (2-1-1) limited each other's offensive opportunities in the first half, as the shots only favored the Mountain Hawks 3-2 through the first 45 minutes. The Retrievers found an opportunity when Gunder Miller registered the frame's only shot on goal, but junior goalkeeper Anton Kinnunen made the save to keep the score even.
Offense picked up for both teams in the second half, as shots favored UMBC 7-4 in the period. Junior Shea Coughlin took Lehigh's only shot on goal in the 68th minute that UMBC goalkeeper Joseph Pollard was able to save. Defensive intensity picked up down the stretch, as both teams each picked up a yellow card. Senior Thomas Robertson gave Lehigh a late chance with a shot in the 88th minute, but ultimately the game ended with a 0-0 result.
"We were organized defensively tonight," said Koski. "I think we're settling in and starting to figure ourselves out."
First-year Andre Erickson led Lehigh with two shots while Coughlin, Robertson, first-year Alex Junquera, first-year Vito Braun, and junior Bora Turker also logged shots in Saturday's draw.
Kinnunen finished the night making three saves in his fifth career shutout.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Tuesday, September 8 at 7 p.m. on the road at Seton Hall.
"I'm pleased that we're making progress defensively, but I'm frustrated for the team that we left some good opportunities on the table," said Koski. "We've got to put the ball on the frame, and that's going to be our emphasis going into this week. If you're going to shoot, get it on the frame."
