EASTON, Pa. – Lehigh men's soccer made the quick trip east on Tuesday evening for the regular season finale against rival Lafayette. The Mountain Hawks fell by a score of 2-1 and now set their sights on the Patriot League tournament.
"I'm incredibly disappointed in our performance tonight," said Ingrassia Family men's head soccer coach Dean Koski. "It was a punch in the stomach to us, and I hope it's a big wake up call regardless of who we are playing on Saturday."
Lafayette (4-9-4, 3-3-3 PL) took the lead over Lehigh (5-7-5, 5-3-1 PL) early in the game, scoring in the eighth minute of the game off the foot of Roy Biegon. The Mountain Hawks offense did generate four shots on goal and five corners in the frame, but they were held scoreless until junior Bora Turker's penalty shot evened the score just before half.
The Leopards went back in front early in the second half, as Samir Dishnica scored in the 50th minute to take a 2-1 lead. However, Lafayette found themselves in trouble with penalties, as two red cards in the second half forced the Leopards to have only nine players on the pitch. The Mountain Hawks had an opportunity to equalize in the 78th minute on a penalty kick from senior Thomas Robertson, but Lafayette goalkeeper Harrison Wolfrom made the save to keep the Leopards in front.
Lehigh dominated the shots category, outshooting Lafayette 28-7 and 14-4 in shots on goal. Roberston paced the Mountain Hawks with five shots while first-year Andre Erickson, senior Trey Sheeler, first-year Alex Junquera, and first-year Vito Braun each tallied four shots.
"We have to do better, we can't win games if we don't put the ball in the back of the net," said Koski. "We hurt ourselves more than they hurt us in this game. We played and made decisions from emotion and not from execution, and that cost us dearly."
The Mountain Hawks will host a Patriot League Championship quarterfinal match at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Saturday, November 7.
"We have to put this behind us as soon as we can and focus on whoever our opponent is going to be," said Koski. "We're going to do our best to get the team ready, lean on our leadership, and be ready to play on Saturday."
