Lehigh's Unbeaten Streak Snapped in 1-0 Loss at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Non-league play continued for Lehigh men's soccer on Tuesday evening from Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium against the University of Delaware. The Mountain Hawks were bested by a score of 1-0, which snapped Lehigh's seven-match unbeaten streak.
"Candidly in spite of the result, it was one of our better performances from our attack to our defending," said Ingrassia Family men's head soccer coach Dean Koski. "I thought we generated opportunities and possessed the ball in areas where we wanted to possess the ball. I thought we were consistent defensively. This was a good midweek game before a very important weekend game against Holy Cross."
Lehigh (3-3-4, 3-0-0 PL) and Delaware (6-2-4, 0-0-1 Summit) played even through the opening 45 minutes, as both teams recorded five shots and one shot on goal. Making his first career start, sophomore goalkeeper Jonah Ramsey stopped the Blue Hens' on goal chance in the tenth minute while Delaware's goalkeeper Eric Widrick made the save on sophomore Bridger Baltes in the 38th minute to keep the score even.
Two additional saves from Ramsey in the 60th and 70th minutes of the second half kept the Mountain Hawks in the game. The Blue Hens thought they had taken the lead in the 64th, but VAR review determined that there was no goal on the play. However, Delaware's Richard Monath got one past Ramsey in the 74th minute that proved to be the game-winner.
First-year Alex Junquera paced the Mountain Hawks offensively with three shot attempts. Baltes, first-year Vito Braun, junior Aiden Gonzalez, and first-year Massimo Talarico also took shots for Lehigh. In total, 18 different players took the pitch for the Mountain Hawks in Tuesday's loss.
"We know we didn't want to have too many guys play 90 minutes, so with the exception of Jonah and our center backs, we were able to rotate everybody," said Koski. "We want to make sure that we are fresh going into the weekend, make sure we're not worried about any yellow cards, and we want to find opportunities for guys to play who we may need down the stretch."
Ramsey made three saves in his collegiate debut.
"Jonah has been training well and we've been looking for opportunities to get him in," said Koski. "I thought he stood tall today and played the way we know he's capable of playing. His decisions were good, his distribution was good, and he made the saves he needed to make."
The first-place Mountain Hawks will resume Patriot League play on Saturday, October 3 at 3 p.m. at Holy Cross.
"All of our sights are now set on Holy Cross," said Koski. "We've got a day of recovery and two days of practice before we've got to go up and play a good Patriot League opponent. We'll have to focus on what we do and try to do it really well."
