LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lehigh men's soccer traveled west on Saturday evening for a Patriot League matchup against the Bucknell Bison. Two first half goals from the Bison allowed Bucknell to defeat the Mountain Hawks 2-0.
"We didn't come out in the first half and play the way that we needed to play to keep the game within reach," said Ingrassia Family men's head soccer coach Dean Koski. "Candidly, I need to do a better job preparing this group for the first 15-20 minutes of each game. We just weren't focused and sharp, and that's my fault."
Bucknell (6-6-1, 3-2-1 PL) took a 1-0 advantage early in the opening frame as Collin Sullivan headed in David Krumov's corner kick in the ninth minute. The Bison extended their lead to two in the 20th minute when Jack Lucas' free kick just got past Lehigh (4-5-5, 4-1-1 PL) goalkeeper Anton Kinnunen to send Bucknell ahead 2-0 at halftime.
The Mountain Hawks' offense came alive in the second half, registering 14 shots after only putting up two in the first 45 minutes. Lehigh found four opportunities on goal in the period, but Bucknell goalkeeper Thomas Yerbury managed to make the saves necessary to keep the Mountain Hawks out of the net.
"Our approach, mentality, and competitiveness, all of which we needed in the first half, revealed themselves in the second," said Koski. "I thought we were a little untidy in the final third with our passing and shooting, but I was pleased to see us make an adjustment and put our foot on the gas a little."
Senior Shea Coughlin led Lehigh with three shots and one on goal while sophomore Ajani Banton, senior Thomas Robertson, sophomore Luciano Larrea, and junior Aiden Gonzalez also put up multiple shots in the loss. Kinnunen finished the night making three saves.
The second-place Mountain Hawks will host first-place Boston University at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Saturday, October 24 at 4 p.m. for Senior Day.
"The most important thing is to get us healthy," said Koski. "We missed Paul Smajlaj, Andre Erickson, Bora Turker, and Landon Bealer tonight, and getting them back in the lineup will bring us both depth and stability. We're going to do our best to be ready to get three points on Saturday against a first-place team."
