Lehigh Defeats Loyola 2-0 in Patriot League Opener

BALTIMORE – Lehigh men's soccer opened Patriot League play on Saturday afternoon on the road from the Ridley Athletic Complex against the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds. The Mountain Hawks earned a 2-0 victory behind two second-half goals.

"I thought we struggled in the first half to be consistent with the way we wanted to play, but we regrouped at halftime and thought we came out in the second half with better intentions," said Ingrassia Family men's head soccer coach Dean Koski. "We did a better job of creating chances in the second half and did a good job defensively of shutting them down."

Lehigh (1-2-3, 1-0 PL) and Loyola (1-6, 0-1 PL) played to a 0-0 draw in the first half. The Lehigh offense was held in check, notching just two shots to Loyola's six. Junior goalkeeper Anton Kinnunen recorded three saves in the first half to keep the Greyhounds off the board.

Lehigh's offense came to life early in the second half, as junior Bora Turker scored his first goal of the season in the 48th minute on assists from junior Aiden Gonzalez and first-year Alex Junquera. Senior Thomas Robertson doubled Lehigh's lead in the 65th minute with his second goal of the season.

"No game has been easy, and I think our guys have learned a lot early on this season," said Koski. "We had good confidence going into this game and we'll have a better confidence coming out of it."

Kinnunen made one second half save, bringing his total on the day to four. The junior recorded his third consecutive shutout and seventh of his career.

The Greyhounds outshot the Mountain Hawks 15-10 and generated five corners to Lehigh's two. Despite this, the Mountain Hawks' excellent defense helped secure the shutout.

"Our backs and Anton are in sync with each other," said Koski. "I like our mentality and we're defending better in the box. And when we need Anton to make a save, he's been there and he's been sharp."

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday, September 19 at 6 p.m. for the Patriot League home opener against Army.

"We're glad to get three points on the road, but we know that every game is going to be a challenge for us," said Koski. "We've got a big game next weekend against Army at home. They've had a good start, so it'll be a good challenge."
