HAMILTON, N.Y. – Lehigh men's soccer traveled north on Friday evening to face the Colgate Raiders on Halloween night. The Mountain Hawks played the Raiders to a 0-0, securing a first-round bye in the Patriot League Tournament with the result.
"Traveling up to Colgate is always a challenge, and the weather certainly made things interesting for both teams," said Ingrassia Family men's head soccer coach Dean Koski. "[Colgate's] energy level was high, and at times we matched it, but by and large we didn't. It's good to be able to grind out a tie and shutout on the on the road."
Lehigh (8-5-4, 5-1-2 PL) and Colgate (5-6-5, 1-3-4 PL) both found chances in the first half, as the shots advantage narrowly favored the Raiders 5-4. The Raiders generated five corners to Lehigh's one and both goalkeepers made two saves in the frame.
Needing a win to keep their postseason hopes alive, Colgate's offense frantically searched for a goal in the second half. The Raiders put up ten shots in the second stanza, two of which were on goal. However, excellent play in net from sophomore Anton Kinnunen and a stringent Lehigh defense kept Colgate off the board.
"We absorbed their attack well," said Koski. "We blocked a lot of shots and didn't give them a lot of good looks. Our defenders and Anton did a great job of standing up in moments."
The Mountain Hawks reached 17 points on the season with the result, which clinches a top two seed and home semifinal match in the Patriot League Tournament. The last time the Mountain Hawks finished in the top two in the Patriot League came in 2019, which is also Lehigh's most recent Patriot League championship. Lehigh can secure the Patriot League regular season crown with a win and American loss on Tuesday. The Raiders were eliminated from postseason contention with the result.
"We were picked sixth in the preseason poll, and I didn't think that was unfair at all from where we finished last year," said Koski. "I'm really proud of the guys for finishing top two in the league. This is a tough league in a tough year, and it's hard to win matches. We're happy to have the bye, that rest is really going to help us."
Sophomores Giacomo Zizza and Shea Coughlin provided Lehigh's shots on goal while senior Jason Pynadath and sophomore Aiden Gonzalez also registered shots in the match. Kinnunen made four saves on route to his second clean sheet in a row and third on the season.
The Mountain Hawks conclude the regular season at home on Tuesday, November 4 at 6 p.m. against Lafayette in The Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute, part of Jefferson Health.
"It's obviously an important rivalry for both Lehigh and Lafayette, and we like to celebrate that rivalry by bringing our best every time we play them," said Koski. "We have to get rested, recovered and be ready to bring our best."
