FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Lehigh men's soccer continued non-league play on Tuesday evening on the road from Lessing Field against the Fairfield University Stags. The Mountain Hawks and Stags were tied 1-1 at halftime and ended the game tied 2-2 in what was the first draw for both teams on the season.
"I was pleased with our overall performance on both sides of the ball," said Ingrassia Family men's head soccer coach Dean Koski. "We put a really good team on their heels for most of the game, and to get a result was important for this team."
Lehigh (0-2-1) opened the game strong offensively, as sophomore Luciano Larrea lifted the Mountain Hawks to a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when his shot bounced off a Fairfield (1-1-1) defender and into the back of the net. First-year Andre Erickson was active on the ball, generating multiple chances for his teammates throughout the first 45 minutes. Despite their chances, Lehigh ultimately conceded a goal to Fairfield's Jett Aktan in the 45th minute to bring the score level at halftime.
"Dre is a baller," said Koski. "He loves competing, he loves playing, and he has a good understanding of the game. He came from the Colorado Rapids academy system, and he has a bright future ahead of him. This was only his second Division I college game, but I thought he had a good game and he's just going to get better."
The Mountain Hawks and Stags played even through the first 25 minutes of action in the second half. Lehigh finally broke the tie in the 70th minute when senior Thomas Robertson netted his first goal of the season to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-1 lead. However, Fairfield responded three minutes later with a goal from Sean Albritton that evened the score at 2-2. The Mountain Hawks had a chance with a corner kick in the 90th minute, but in the end the match concluded with a score of 2-2.
Larrea, Robertson, and junior Shea Coughlin each recorded two shots in Friday's draw while first-year Alex Junquera registered a shot in his first career start. Junior goalkeeper Anton Kinnunen finished the match with four saves.
"I thought we played with confident offensively, and when you play with confidence, good things happen," said Koski. "We will build off this…we created quite a few chances tonight against, again, a really good team that beat UConn and lost to Marshall 2-1 who are both great teams."
The Mountain Hawks return to the Ulrich Sports Complex on Saturday, September 5 at 6 p.m. to host UMBC.
"We have to do better defensively, and I thought both goals we gave up were just defensive mistakes," said Koski. "We can't average giving up two goals per game and expect to get a lot of results. Shoring ourselves up defensively is going to be our biggest challenge, and that's all eleven players on the field."
