Lehigh Falls 6-4 To Army West Point In Series Deciding Game Three

3/31/2024 6:08:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh and Army West Point split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at J. David Walker Field, making way for a series-deciding game three on Sunday. Despite out-hitting the Black Knights, the Mountain Hawks ultimately fell by a score of 6-4.

Andrew Berg earned the win for Army West Point (14-13, 5-2 PL) after striking out four in 4.0 innings in relief of starter Mike Ruggieri. Tommy Lamar was credited with the loss for Lehigh (16-10-1) after conceding the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Teddy Tolliver started on the mound for the Mountain Hawks, allowing two runs while striking out two in 5.0 full innings.

The Black Knights popped the lid on the game's scoring early, taking a 1-0 after the first inning. Derek Berg earned a leadoff walk and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch, which allowed Chris Barr to single him home. The Mountain Hawks had chances in the early going, but left five runners on base through the first three innings to remain scoreless.

Lehigh broke through in the fourth courtesy of a Braydon Hubbard bases-loaded single that sent Riley Davis past home plate to tie the game. They followed that up with another in the fifth, taking a 2-1 lead over the Black Knights after Justin Butler scored unearned off of an error.

However, Lehigh's lead at 2-1 would be their last. Braden Golinski's RBI single tied the game in the sixth and Berg's RBI double in the seventh gave Army the lead. The Black Knights added three more insurance runs off of hits from Justin Lehman and William Parker in the eighth and ninth frames. Although the Mountain Hawks added two runs in the bottom of the ninth off the bat of Trystan Crawford, Lehigh was unable to complete the comeback.

The Mountain Hawks now gear up for round two of the Liberty Bell Classic against the Rider Broncs. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Lawrenceville, N.J. on Tuesday.
