Mountain Hawks Bested By Navy In Doubleheader Sweep

4/6/2024 7:30:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The first of two Patriot League doubleheaders at J. David Walker Field commenced on Saturday afternoon, with Lehigh playing host to the Navy Midshipmen. The Mountain Hawks dropped a narrow 2-1 decision in a ten-inning game one while the Midshipmen completed the sweep with a 6-3 win in game two.

Nolan Jorgenson earned the win for Navy (19-11, 10-3 PL) after entering the game in relief of starter Tyler Grenn, who allowed only one run through 8.0 full innings. Marcus Danchision was credited with the loss for Lehigh (16-12-1, 3-6 PL) after striking out four in 5.0 innings. He entered in relief of starter Cole Leaman, who tossed 5.0 innings with five strikeouts and only one run allowed.

The Mountain Hawks and Midshipmen traded runs in the first inning to begin the game, as Andrew Manning's single sent Zane Raba past home plate for the game's first run. Rafe Perich responded in the bottom of the frame with a groundout RBI that scored Jake Whitlinger to tie the game at one apiece.

Pitching and defense would dominate the game in the following innings. The Mountain Hawks were retired in order continually with the exception of one over the course of the next five innings. However, Navy was unable to score in that same time frame, taking the game past the scheduled seventh inning with the score still tied.

Both teams left runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but neither team got a run past the plate, taking us to a tenth inning. Victor Izquierdo finally broke the tie in the top of the inning, sending Brock Murtha home on an RBI single to center field. The Mountain Hawks put the tying run on base with only one out on the board, but a double play gave Navy the game one win.

Navy's Ryan Bibb picked up the win for the Midshipmen in game two after allowing one run in 6.0 innings in relief of starter Matthew Shirah. Teddy Tolliver was credited with the loss after conceding four runs in 3.1 innings of work.

Both Navy and Lehigh scored runs in the first inning once again, setting the score at 1-1 after the first thanks to RBIs from Murtha and Tyler Young. However, the Mountain Hawks quickly gained the lead in the second inning after Owen Walewander's sac-bunt plated Andrew Kohl.

The Midshipmen, who registered a hit in every inning of game two, broke through in a big way in the fourth. Jack Killelea gave Navy the advantage on a 2RBI single past third base to take a 3-2 lead. Two more runs would be walked in during the inning, setting the score at 5-2 in favor of Navy with only three innings to go.

After a scoreless fifth, Navy added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Eduardo Diaz scampered home after a failed attempt to stop Murtha from stealing second. Kohl would crush a solo home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the seventh, but it was all too late, as Navy completed the sweep with a 6-3 win.

The Mountain Hawks return to J. David Walker Field tomorrow for another Patriot League doubleheader against the Bucknell Bison. First pitch of game one is slated for 12 p.m.
