Offensive Explosion Helps Mountain Hawks Split Doubleheader At Saint Peter's

3/16/2024 7:02:00 PM | Baseball

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Lehigh baseball started off a four-game series against Saint Peter's on Friday with a 6-1 win on their own home field. The series shifted to New Jersey on Saturday for a doubleheader, which the Mountain Hawks and Peacocks split. Saint Peter's took game one 3-2 while Lehigh's offense took center stage in an 18-8 win in game two.

"Our pitchers did a great job in game one, but we just couldn't get the clutch hit when we needed it," said head coach Sean Leary. "In game two, Perich and Butler once again led the way for our offense. Rogers also had another strong game. It was good to see the entire lineup making contributions."

Starting on the mound for Saint Peter's (5-15) in game one was freshman Jonny Gilligan, who threw 6.0 full innings with eight strikeouts while allowing two runs. The win was awarded to John Wade, who kept Lehigh (11-5-1) scoreless in the top of the seventh to allow the Peacocks to walk it off in the bottom of the frame. The loss was given to Tommy Lamar after he entered in relief of starting pitcher Marcus Danchision.

After each team left runners on base to open game one, each pitcher delivered 1-2-3 innings in the second to quickly head to the third inning. Both offenses shined in the third, as a Rafe Perich double scored Ryan Cochran and Braydon Hubbard while a Tyler Smith double scored two runs to tie the contest 2-2 at the end of three.

From this point on, pitching continued to control the pace of the game. The Peacocks allowed only one Lehigh hit over the next three innings while the Mountain Hawks conceded only two in that stretch, taking the game to the seventh and final inning still tied at two apiece.

Wade, who was a positional player for Saint Peter's on Friday, took to the mound in the top of the seventh. The junior retired the side 1-2-3 to give his team a chance to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh. After Logan Baker hit a double to lead-off the inning, Tyler Cotton singled him home to secure the Peacocks' fifth win of the season.

While game one was dictated by pitching, hitting was certainly the story of game two. The Mountain Hawks recorded 16 hits in the game while the Peacocks tallied 11 of their own.

The winning pitcher was Najir Glenn, who struck out five batters in 4.0 innings as the starter. Brandon Coughlin earned the save for Lehigh after throwing the final 3.0 innings of the game. Freshman left-hander Mason Williams picked up the loss for Saint Peter's.

The Peacocks started the game's scoring in the first inning with a two-run shot from Cotton to take a 2-0 lead. The Mountain Hawks responded in the top of the second with an Andrew Noone sac-fly followed by a Justin Butler RBI single and Tyler Young 2RBI double in the top of the third to take a 4-2 lead.

Saint Peter's would score three more runs over the course of the next two innings, however, that would not be enough to keep up with Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks added two runs in the fourth off of a bases loaded hit by pitch and a fielder's choice. Perich then connected on a two-run double in the fifth followed by an Andrew Nole RBI single, setting the score at 9-6 in favor of Lehigh after five.

After a groundout scored a run for Saint Peter's in the sixth, Lehigh's offense took off in the seventh. The Mountain Hawks scored a whopping nine runs in the frame, which included a total of seven hits. Butler got things started with his eighth home run of the season followed by an Andrew Kohl double that scored first-year Robbie Carvelli. Next up was Raffaele Rogers, who connected on his first-career home run that added two more runs for his team. A bases loaded walk and Carvelli 3RBI single set the score at 18-7 at the end of the inning. The Peacocks were able to add an additional run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wouldn't be enough to overcome Lehigh's offensive explosion.

The Mountain Hawks will return to J. David Walker Field tomorrow at 1 p.m. to conclude the weekend's series against the Peacocks. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ for those unable to attend.
